Knowing what you know now , which Heavyweight fight in history would you most wish to 'time travel' back too, to watch with a ringside seat ? It may be your favourite fighter ? It may be a historic fight or it may be all about the venue or the occasion. Which one would it be for you ?
It would have to be Ali vs Liston 2, then hopefully I'd be able to get a good look into Liston's eyes to see if he was faking or not.
Well I saw the FOTC between Ali and Joe Frazier at MSG, a night to remember for sure, but one heavyweight fight never captured on film [or shown] I would have killed to see was the Jack Dempsey demolition of Fred Fulton in less than one minute in 1918.. Ringsiders who were there were amazed by this young untamed killer named Jack Dempsey, and I would have loved to have seen it...
would've loved to be there at demsey vs Willard. sun shining, middle of a summers afternoon in july 1919. band playing, a million identical hats, history unfolding before your eyes, seeing my own face in the crowd in a 100 year old photograph
I could have bought a ticket for the FOTC for £125, flight included it was beyond my pocket then, a lasting regret.
Has to be a fight that was not filmed. Although the atmosphere for Louis v Schmeling must have been something. To see it in colour! And live! Graziano v Zale perhaps? Or even Minter v Sibson? I really can't narrow it down.
Hya Mc. Seeing the FOTC was a last minute surprise to me as my buddy bought me a ticket and called me up a few hours before the event and told me to get ready...What a night that was. Walking into the lobby seeing people in sharp attire, with even men wearing fur coats and the tension mounting....We sat at the end arena, and luckily I took my binoculars and saw Sinatra and Burt Lancaster sitting by ringside...I recall before the main event the announcer introducing all the living ex heavyweight champions and as he walked away from the microphone a roar from the crowd screamed out "Dempsey, Dempsey ", and the forgetful announcer took the mic and introduced the old Manassa Mauler much to the delight of the crowd...And then to the main event where one of my very favourite fighters Joe Frazier prevailed...Indeed the FOTC...
Dempsey Vs the Orchid man is a good call for the luminaries in the crowd. Dempsey Tunney ll another great call. Schmeling vs Louis ll another amazing atmosphere.
Burt.. wow...priveleged to be communicating with somebody who was actually at the FOTC. ! Watching it live and with no commentary how did people around you and yourself 'have ' the fight ?
Minter v Sibson was due to be televised but Doug Bidwell, Minter's then father in law, and manager got sponsorship by DAF trucks and had advertising all over his trunks . The BBC pulled the fight as a result. Mickey Duff was less than pleased.
