I remember he was at one time rated p4p the second best fighter in the world behind only Marvin Hagler at the time. In fact such was his growing rep at that time in the mid 1980s that people thought that he would have moved up in weight and eventually be the one that would dethrone the then dominant middleweight king. It all fell apart after Curry was shocked by Lloyd Honeyghan and though he would win more title fights, he was never the same fighter again.

A good, fairly successful career in the end but could he have been so much more or was he in hindsight, simply overrated to begin with?

Suffered from burn out. Had over 300 amateur fights, body basically shot its wad.
Also got screwed when Jimmy Carter administration when US boycotted Olympics.
After pro career spent a fortune on Atty fees defending against bogus drug charges................that he beat.

    :?

How does that work exactly, when Curry's his best win? That just seems a bit like a self defeating argument; snake eating its own tail...

Give him iron whiskers and he is a surefire ATG.

He certainly had the skills to b an ATG . The Honeygan and McCallun fights definitely shattered his confidence. That along with burn out and I believe he admitted he had either alcohol problems and maybe drug problems while he was fighting. I really don't remember without researching him. But his skills were incredible.

All offense, but inflexible and a bit brittle. Didn't have the defensive skills to compete with the elite.

At his best stalking and walking down foes but he couldn't have done that with the Leonard/Hearns/Hagler/Duran set.

Donald Curry had terrific skills and ability, but lacked the durability and dedication to be among the best welterweights ever.

    His defense was very good.

He baited leads to counter but rarely got hit all that cleanly in his prime.

300 amateur fights :yikes, jeez, why did those kids back in the day spend so much wear and tear on the body for nothing:-(, if you can't turn pro after 50-100 amateur fights the sports not for you...

Curry did have a lot of bad luck, wasn't he the fighter of the year in 1984?

Pisses me off like a raging mother, that he (Curry) ISN'T in the BOXING HOF, but that puke Sylvester Stallone is who NEVER boxed a pro round in his life is, and if he would have would have got his ass beaten to a pulp..

The only thing Stallone should be in any HOF for is making his bull**** cheesy movies...

I don't think he was overrated.. His career had the trajectory of a truly great champion.. Excellent blend of skills, speed, power, ring generalship and a lot of good wins along with a unified crown. Only thing was that it was cut short the way that it was for men like Joe Frazier, Mike Tyson, Arron pryor, etc... But the appraisal he received while his success was still in progress was spot on.

Don Curry had 400 AM fights.Beat Davey Moore in the Olympic trials.
And when he was at his best VERY hard to hit-ask Marlon Starling.
Fell in love with his power and also let his weight get out of control is what ruined his career.Would have beaten the **** out of Honeyghan had he controlled his weight better but credit to Honeyghan .

He walked right into the pocket against Jones ,a big banger, nothing wrong with his defence.
