To many times fans get caught on this P4P thing, rather that look at the real merit of boxers .records and quality of opponents..in my book, there's only ONE. P4P , SRR...after that is just simply a marketing tool to try to create interest in boxing after suffering so many black eyes!!

It has always been apples and oranges.

And now the magazine that came up with the somewhat official P4P list is using it as a blatant marketing tool to promote/legitimate fights and fighters.

Certainly in the age of countless belts and beltholders from which most refuse to fight eachother because they might lose and with that a great part of their status and income, resume isn't a very good measuring tool anymore either.
If a guy is too good, has the 'wrong' nationality and doesn't bring countless millions to the table he'll never have a good resume this day and age, because they simply avoid fighting him. So no P4P top spot for him until he gets there on pure accumulation of decent scalps, while he's constantly being questioned by national superioritist because he's not 'one of their own'.

But aside from that, how many highly regarded P4P fighters were removed as quickly from that list as they were put on there?! Because they were either extremely overrated or got a couple of 'resume' wins over fading top boxers, so just fighting the right opponent at the right time...
And for the complete career all time P4P lists there's a couple of big holes in there as well.
Can you imagine how high a guy like RJJ would have been on the all time lists if he quit over a decade ago after the Ruiz fight? And would it have been deserved? So even that is as objective as it gets.

P4P lists are fun, but completely useless in the long run.

P4P has never been a legit thing to begin with, especially the "top 10" lists which always make very little sense, and no matter how the list looked like, there are always countless faults to be found (the biggest one being that it's actually an opinion rather than a fact). I agree that it is a marketing tool to promote certain boxers and almost nothing more, and it's completely irrelevant for the "sports" side of boxing. There is a reason why it doesn't exist in Olympic/amateur boxing.

It's always funny when someone brings "but he is P4P #4/5/6" etc into discussion.

Yes it's useless. So is the fictitious lineal championship made up by the fans. They are tools of argument...that's about it.

I disagree about the lineal champion...it is after all: the man who beat the man....and that is tangible stat in boxing ...perhaps the only true measuring stick for each weight class!!

Yeah .. the lineal champ should be the guy, but given that the ABCs (currently) have no real enthusiasm for the best fighting the best from other sanctioning bodies it remains very open to question.

Right now it's the guy who got the opportunity to beat the guy.

I'm hoping that the recent WBC, IBF and WBA negotiations could lead to some movement (shame the WBO weren't involved cos there is a number of WBO titlists who have reasonable claim to be the best at their weight).

More broadly P4P lists have always been incredibly subjective, and whilst I kinda keep an eye on them for a bit of fun, they are essentially meaningless.

In fact - given that they are used nowhere outside of fan discussion and have little or no influence on any of the ABCs rankings or elsewhere in the sport for matchmaking, the TSs proposal that these effectively meaningless lists be eliminated has, well, zero meaning.

P4P is a way to determine which boxers deserve the better "real merit" and respect for their "records and quality of opponents."

If you think P4P means anything else, you're thinking about it wrong.

Yes and no. Yes we should keep it, but has to be done by a 3rd party or neutral experts. I don't take Ring magazine's rankings serious anymore since being owned by Oscar when he had Canelo and Broner in the rankings. I understand you want to promote your fighters, but to have them in the top 10 p4p rankings prematurely is absurd.
