it looks like Bailey ruined the confidence of Jones completely. you could see it also with the time he spent out of the ring. now though, i can't see him doing anything. if he does continue, it's going to take a lot of work just getting him back to a decent level. will any promoters out there want to spend their time on him? doubt it. but hey, that's how **** goes sometimes...

i remember when this guy was being hyped to the rafters. the Americans were claiming he would have blasted Brook out of there if they ever fought. how times change.

There are exceptions to that rule, if the fighter is skilled enough to hide it by not getting hit on it too much.
Like Floyd Patterson in the past, more recently Kevin Kelly and maybe you remember some guy named Roy Jones jr.

 

Mike Jones vs Kell Brook was a fight discussed ages ago. Mike Jones was IBF #1 and Kell Brook was IBF #2 so basically there was very preliminary discussion of the two fighting for the vacant title. Talks went nowhere because Mike Jones would not fight in the UK due to paranoia surrounding if he couldn't get a fair shake while Kell Brook would not fight in the US because the fight would be worth pennies compared to if it were staged in the UK. So, Mike Jones got Randall Bailey who I assume was IBF #3 and we all know what happened next.

For the small time Jones vs Brook was a possibility most people picked Mike Jones to stop Kell Brook. Brook had only barely begun to pick up some hype which was mostly blown off as Brits being Brits. I decided to check Brook out for myself and saw a skilled boxer-puncher that relied heavily on reflexes for defense. He was essentially trying to emulate Nassem Hamed as best he could. A lot of people saw this and thought he was overrated and overhyped as they questioned what'd happen when he tried pulling back from punches with his hands down against better opponents. The Kell Brook of now is basically much more polished but equally skillful then as now. He DOES have some sharp, impressive reflexes. He boxes at range well before suddenly unloading quick accurate power punches and has generally shown himself to have a very good punch.

Mike Jones, on the other hand, was seen as an extremely tall and large Welterweight with tremendously fast hands and carrying about half a notch below conclusive one punch power all gift wrapped into a guy capable of both utilizing his range to maximum effect AND slugging on the inside with short punches. HBO began to showcase him and so confident in Mike Jones were HBO and Arum that they began to mention him as the guy that would be most dangerous for Manny Pacquiao at Welterweight with hopes of doing that PPV fight as soon as possible. All Jones had left to do was dispatch of Randall Bailey, then quickly get him to dispatch of an Andre Berto or Shane Mosley and they would have already probably tried to make Pacquiao-Jones off of that. That was the extent of hype and hope behind Mike Jones.

It is only TWO years later that you are reading that. Within two years Mike Jones suffered a knockout loss so brutal he indefinitely left the sport for said two years only to finally return and get beaten down into a TKO loss so bad people are wondering if he will ever fight again while Kell Brook slowly raised his competition, was finally given a tough battle from which he came out a much better fighter and then finally received a title shot in which he won the title from a legitimate and respect beltholder rather than as a vacant title. Most people are now completely sold on Kell Brook and are immediately willing to accept him as top 3-5 while Mike Jones wouldn't even be ranked top 10 within a single belt org within ANOTHER two years.
