Basically it seemed to me that Maidana punched himself out and was tired in the second half of the fight. He has to pace himself better and try and get a higher connect rate because too many of his punchers were essentially wasted energy. In every round, he has to be busier than Mayweather. In other words he has to find that line where he's winning rounds because he's landing more than Mayweather but at the same time not to punch himself out as early as he did the last fight. IN the first fight, had he maintained the pace he had in the first 6 rounds for another 3-4 rounds he likely would have won.

 

Throw less, land a whole lot more.

I thought the first fight was very close, whereas Canelo had an even card and De La Hoya had a card in his favor those cards were wrong. Maidana pulled even on one card and deserved it and had it been a majority draw it wouldn't have been considered a bad decision by most.

Ive seen the fight a few times and watched breakdowns and highlights and I got this feeling

Mayweather took over the fight from round 6 on and it would seem like if Floyd fought round 1 like round 6 he would win and that he figured Maidana out and a rematch would be wider. Well Floyd usually comes out slow and cautious in the first 3 rounds. Maidana will still have a shot to win possibly 2 of the first 3 while Floyd is still measuring. Fight one was odd as it took Floyd 6 rounds to adjust and take command which is unheard of. I think most of that had to do with the cut from the head clash.

2 factors to consider, does Maidana have more success early than he did last time? I think Floyd was trapped on the ropes early for 2 reasons A- Maidana is very good at cutting off the ring and B- Floyd had nothing for him that he respected and Floyd couldn't keep him off. So this time does Maidana land something or an accumulation of shots early and do more damage this time. His overhand right is very dangerous, does he mix in a straighter punch or make the uppercut a punch he had success with vs Broner this time

Factor 2 is the cut. I gotta say in round 4 when Floyd was cut and down on my card 3-0 the night of and was clearly bothered by the cut and losing round 4 it felt like Floyd might lose. Ive been watching Floyd since 2000-2001 and it was the first time I was watching and went hey its not looking good. Does Maidana going in head on and rough open another cut or cause other problems

If Maidana does not grab an early advantage and do damage and maybe cut Floyd he will have problems

Round 5 was Maidanas best round and it was a round he won in the middle of the ring and scored at mid range. 6,8,10 were Floyd rounds all day but Maidana was awfully competitive. I gotta say in losing those rounds but competing I was more impressed by his improvements than ineffective mauling early in the rounds he won.

Maidana clearly slowed down but I don't think he gassed I mean his hands were high and he punched with force and had head movement but he just lost his activity rate and I think this is mostly in part to Floyd making the adjustments

At the end of the day I think after a great performance from Marcos and a rough start from Floyd, Mayweather still won or at worst drew. Maidana did not win that fight but could easily have gotten a draw. Maidana is younger and with Garcia continues to get better and maybe he has a new trick up his sleeve. Floyd is as good as we will ever see, he is in his mid/later thirties and wont have anything new. Maidana saw Floyds best stuff 6-12 and was live in the fight.

I think this can be a damn good one but I think Floyd takes this in a competitive clear win probably resembling the Cotto fight

To beat Floyd Maidana would have to be bigger, faster, stronger, smarter......bigger and stronger he can do, but faster and smarter is where he will run into problems.
