Rubio is a solid challenger.

Because Jantuah-Rubio occurred over a decade ago, at a lower weight class. Sometimes fighters suffer an early round KO loss at a lower weight and then proceed to absorb punishment a lot better upon moving up to a weight class that suits them better.

All the big names are unavailable, so who would you want him to fight instead?

I guess if Rubio doesn't then it's another solid feather in Golovkins cap.

I'm a GGG fan but I'm also looking forward to him taking on fighters who can genuinely challenge him. Rubio's solid, but IMO offers nothing more in any single department than Golovkin's faced in the past - the package might be more rounded as argued by IB, but I'm not convinced Rubio particularly stretches Golovkin.

We've seen in the past though that two or three decent wins don't necessarily guarantee top level status. In Golovkin's case I'm basically sold - I think he isn't really likely to come close to losing at 160, but it still needs proving in the ring, and not just once or twice. Rubio isn't a bad step towards that.

That said I am hoping that Golovkin will at least dip his toes in the 168 waters in the near future... unless a major new talent (and there is one or two possibilities on the horizon) arises in the next year or two, I see Golovkins most challenging and lucrative options at the higher weight.

You're right - and you know who else shouldn't get ANY credit?

Monzon, for stopping Emile Griffith. I mean, after all, Griffith was taken out in 1 by not-so-great Hurricane Carter at light middleweight just eight years earlier!

Rubio is going to have to punch with him and hope for the best.

Awesome posts IB. I learned quite a bit about Veneno.

I actually hope it goes beyond 8 rounds, I want to see Golovkin's butter smooth footwork in the late rounds to determine whether he can be a long distance break-you-down guy. My humble prediction is GGG stops MAR on his feet in the 10th.

Rubio should fight GGG like he fought Lemieux weather the early storm attempt to survive and see if he can time him and land something big late, Rubio is far more intelligent a boxer than many give him credit for, with Garcia in his corner he's showing more skill than he used to. I've wanted to see this fight since GGG's hypetrain began, like you IB I'm a fan but a cautious one, which is what led me to write my Geale "may" have a chance thread, but Rubio may have an outside chance, regardless Rubio will be a great measuring stick nonetheless.

Realistically, do you think there's anything Rubio does that will bother Trip G? I just think back to the Lemieux fight and if GGG gets him in trouble like that, it's all over. GGG will be able to get Marco against the ropes where he likes to try and block shots and stand straight up and that will not work.

I don't think GGG is as explosive or as fast as Lemieux, GGG won't go all out like that anyway, he punches harder and more accurately but not as savage and wild, Rubio has great stamina he can run for the first few rounds without taking too much damage. Rubio punches pretty hard he may be able to hurt GGG, Stevens stopped him in his tracks a few times Marco has a small chance.

Good fight for GGG. Rubio beat Lemieux bad when he was the next best thing, undefeated and knocking everybody out. Sure some good, experienced posters here warned that although Lemieux had potential he was raw and untested. As a fellow Canuck, I bought into Lemieux and of course he got whipped by the the tougher, more experienced Rubio. Rubio will come to fight and while it lasts this fight will be a barn burner.

GGG stated he was upset with one of the founding fathers of the usa. He stated it was something about a cherry tree being chopped down. He further stated that this act hindered his professional carreer.

Of course he's a solid fighter and you broke down why but when you want Golovkin to get his shot at the title against a superstar so he can become a superstar (which I do) and he ends up fighting a solid guy that got basically shut out by JC non-super-anything star it's really disappointing. Rubio deserves to be ranked a top ten fighter like he is at least.
