Who do you rate higher as a fighter at their best- Oscar Bonavena at heavyweight or Marcos Maidana at welterweight? I say welterweight because I assume it's his best weight and where he's become a mature fighter.

This may seem odd to compare them at a glance but they are both awkward sluggers from the same country that might be more technically skilled than they look to a lot of people and Bonavena was known for giving tough fights to two great heavyweights that were still in their championship years as his best work, Maidana's crowning achievement is giving a tough fight to a great fighter while champion - thus far - and you never know what will happen next.

Technically this thread came about when talking to someone trying to compare Mayweather's resume favorably to Ali's :)lol:). I thought I was making a concession by saying Floyd's win over Maidana was comparable to Ali over Bonavena. This guy acted like that was silly because Bonavena was never world champion and Maidana was. I said they both equal nothing but very good contenders in their era when you cancel out the alphabet soup mess, because they were never rated highest in their divisions. Unquestionably comparable to me. Agree? Anyway who do you think was the best at their best? Chino or Ringo?

I think Chino is slightly more talented. With Garcia he has severely improved and i feel he would beat Khan in a rematch.

I dont know why, but i've got this funny feeling in my stomach about the upcoming rematch with Mayweather.

I feel like a Tarver/Jones, Douglas/Tyson scenario is just around the corner.

Chino for me, nobody has an easy time with him and the guy has dangerous power.

Eduardo Lausse without a doubt IMO with Rivero, Roldan, Castro, Vasquez below where Maidana would fit in.

V, you took the words out of my mouth. Eduardo Lausse was a helluva
middleweight from Argentina that P4P was much better than Maidana.
A terrific swarmer with a great left hook. Saw him at the old MSG...

Just ask Gene Fullmer about Lausse.

You can have a look at Lausse on youtube even. Unless you're just looking for the best out of the two you mentioned.

I don't see more skills in Lausse when compared with Maidana to be brutally honest here.

The Bonavena comparison is a interesting one because he had such an awkward style that is hard to say what he did that you could call a real skill.

MAIDANA OR BONAVENA. MAIDANA OR BONAVENA. MAIDANA OR BONAVENA. MAIDANA OR BONAVENA. MAIDANA OR BONAVENA. >>>>>>
Jesus. Apparently not. At least it didn't get carted off to the general. But AT WHAT COST?

Yes i see your point and while Vasquez had a very respectable title reign Lausse's win over Fullmer, especially considering the manner in which he won, along with his H2H ability makes me rate him as being more formitable. Good thread.
