why didn't ron lyle win a title? he was as big, strong and as great a puncher as frazier or foreman.and jerry quarry? he beat ron lyle and shavers, mac foster (though could not stand up to frazier's power?) what was their missing championship trait?
Mostly it was that the competition was so stiff. Quarry, in my opinion, just wasn't big enough. Lyle was big and powerful, but he turned pro very late. He didn't start making noise until his 30's.
Nothing more then they came at a time where the champions were all time greats and a head above them both. Ron could be outboxed and many thought Jerry lost both bouts against a little past it Patterson. So he was at that level, clearly top 5 contender but not in the league of Frazier, Ali, and Foreman.
Lyle , in additional to starting very late, also suffered a terrible near fatal stabbing while in prison which in no doubt imputed him physically as well ...
As long as Klitschko kept the jab going Jerry would clearly lose, but Quarry was an excellent counter puncher with power and he would wait for an opening. Should W. go in for a ko and Jerry connected it could be all over. Jerry was a b+ fighter in an era of A and A+ champions.
Lyle started too late. Quarry didn't have the right men in his corner during his formative years. Also, Jerry had substance abuse issues.
jerry, never had drugs issues until career finished. Johnny flores & that ****ing daddy of his was his downfall though. That ****ers training regime ****ed his 3 boys up big time!! Read that jerry biography that cane out 3 yrs back & thad spencers too. VERY VERY SAD BOOKS!
