    Not an announcer, but I think Paulie is up there. He's good at explaining what's happening in the ring, like when he pointed out how Maidana set up the left hook that floored Broner.

    Jim Grey is a legend. I like commentators who confront boxers if they are ducking fights, having a shitty performance etc. I don't like ass kissers. Cossell was another great too in this regard. In spite of his close friendship with Ali he would always criticize him for a bad performance or tell him he flat out got a lucky decision like in the Young fight. It takes real integrity and balls to be that kind of a commentator.

    I'm only 31, if you consider that really young - but The Professor is an OG flower child - not to mention a Professor! - and he seems to agree with me. :conf

    Howard Cossell was and is referred to, rightfully, as a "piece of ****"

    Good commentators/analysts include Jones, Lampley, Merchant (in his prime), Tarver, Kenny, Tessitore, Albert and Papa.

    Kellerman, Rawling and Atlas are the worst.

    Hey Professor, did you really just use the word "nomenclature" on a forum about hitting people in the head? And "triparte?" I don't even know what that means, unless you meant "tripartite." Anyway, those things are neither here nor there. About my "misnomer" - I'm repeating myself, but again no one refers to Buffer as an "announcer," instead, he's always referred to as a "ring-announcer." There was a time, Professor, believe it or not, when sports "announcers" were seldom if ever referred to as commentators - e.g. Howard Cosell was invariably (ya like that word?) referred to as a sports "announcer."

    It was pretty terrible but to be fair to Lampley he's a good hypeman... chats a lot of **** but his voice/style normally add excitement

    I think you hit it on the head - his voice and style add excitement. Just imagine an HBO fight without him - not the same.

    Jim is incredibly biased but I love his passion.
    Kellerman is smarmy and obnoxious but still very good
    Bernstein Showtime shill but still decent and old school
    Cosell was too much of a yuckster in his delivery, but good
    Love Larry Merchant he's a cranky old *******

    But the most underrated commentator is.........Steve Farhood


    Buffer is the best Announcer to answer the OP's question
