Great win for Carl and Kiko played his part aswell. Some thought it would be a walkover but Carl had to be at his best to win.

At the fight with my son and 16,000 Belfast accented fans!
Great occasion and a classy, disciplined performance.
O'Kane was so, so lucky though.

I interviewed Barry McGuigan prior to the Kiko Martinez fight and asked about Rigondeaux. Here's what he had to say:

Rigondeaux is the chief executive of the Who Needs Him club.
He’s all wrong for most of the fighters who are out there. He doesn’t draw. Great quality fighter, no doubt about that, but he’s very negative. He doesn’t like to come and fight, he likes to prize you open with a southpaw jab, doesn’t have a TV deal.
I’m not thinking beyond September 6, but if we’re planning ahead we think 'what makes sense for us financially?' Because ultimately that’s what this game’s about. It’s a business and also it’s about attractiveness and TV exposure.
If I want to set Carl up for the rest of his life, I’ve got to make sure I pick the most attractive fights. So Rigondeaux's in our thoughts down the line, but not now.

Hard to know where they will go next. Looking to me like it will be a venue in the UK for Avalos or Quigg if it can be made with terms favourable to Frampton. Pity he was never promoted in the south and feel that ship has sailed now. I won't rule out Frampton's next fight taking place in the USA though, because he's eager to go.

That's exactly what I've been saying. Even when he was on the Late Late Show that one time Carl made no effort to sell himself to the southern audience at all. he barely opened his mouth. In fact barry did all the talking.

At a comparable stage in their respective careers Barry's profile down here was MASSIVE, Carls is negligible.

The point is Carl is now a small bit stuck.

He has outgrown NI venues, and - because of not being a big star down south - he cant be certain of filling the bigger venues down here.

So he may be forced to go abroad - and by 'abroad' i mean off the island altogether. Not that it would be the end of the world. So what if he has to fight Quigg in Manchester? He still beats Quigg IMO.

Bernard Dunne didnt have that problem, in fairness.

Dunne didn't need to, different context. O2/Point was as good as it got for him whereas McGuigan has gone on record literally dozens of times saying he wanted to bring Frampton to the south, and he's outgrown most the indoor venues in the north ruling him out of fighting there from wha, October to April?
