I had the pleasure of interviewing Larry Holmes today and that's one of the many interesting things he told me.

I haven't been here in a while. Some of you may remember my interviews with Shannon Briggs and Marvis Frazier. Today I had a great chat with Larry and we covered many topics, a lot of which he never went into detail on before.

Larry has had a chip on his shoulder ever since Tyson knocked him out. I'm sure he'd tell you Norton, Shavers, and Mercado hit harder than Tyson too. **** Larry.

Well he did accurately predict Tyson's demise.

Listen to interview. He said nothing negative about Tyson. He's cooled down a lot over the years.

...And to get the ball rolling on more discussion, my comment so far from YOUR great boxing forum:

Nice job Duggy! You had him at ease & revealed the gentler side that has veen there, but ovscured by his resentments at other times. Some thoughts...

I cannot see Frazier hitting harder than Tyson. He was an attrition fighter, & if he hit so hard with his accuracy & work rate, guys would have gone earlier more often. An exception was Foster, but he was very light for his height & never successful at HW, though top power for a LHW. And Frazier hit harder than him & HARD, but Tyson got huge guys out quickly with less blows, & just looking at film seems to produce more power. I wonder if losing to Tyson effected his assessment. He was nice about him, but before the fight was unnecessarily negative about Tyson's life prospects (though he was correct).

The context of the Marciano comments was that he was unfairly upbraided by some & should have GOTTEN that 2nd fight. No context though made the statement right though, it was disrespectful & made in bitterness he sometimes marinated in. Holmes vs. Rocky would be tough to pick...I give just the greatest swarmers the decision over Holmes, but the size/reach disparity with Holmes skill would make it hard to pick.

He was gracious even about Foreman, a funny plaintive quality when he added he did not know why George never fought him, after already supplying a perfectly credible answer.

Holmes was a great champion, & what he did when old was very impressive too.
Against Mccall, Mercer, Butterbean when ancient...Just how close it was vs. prime Holyfileld shows me that with his best reflexes & legs he would have clearly won.

If Larry Holmes ever sparred with Hector Camacho he'd likely claim that Hector hit harder than Tyson too..

Why would Holmes want to discredit the only man to knock him out??

Don't you think he'd feel silly when people start saying "if Tyson could knock him out just imagine what Frazier would do because Larry said he hit harder than Mike?"

Its a tactic that fighters use all too often to make themselves look good, and one that Holmes employs all the time, hence, " The guy who's ass I beat hit harder than the one who sparked me in 4. " And Tyson is a fighter that Holmes has never given an ounce of credit to. Granted Holmes and Frazier never actually fought, and only sparred, but I don't believe for one instant that Holmes REALLY thought Joe hit harder than Tyson.

Yes but Holmes never fought and never did beat Frazier so that point doesn't make sense, if anything that would make Holmes appear worse off because that would get people thinking Frazier would destroy Holmes if they ever did fight.
