I think its actually pretty significant. Try getting the average teenager to stay focussed long enough to make it through a training session let alone putting forth the mental capacity to dominate a professional sport.. its about a 1 in a million chance of it happening. And a 20 year old 5'11" 216 lb kid beating 28-30 year old guys who are established professionals ranging in height from 6'3" to 6'5", weighing between 218-230 ain't too bad either. Mike was something special.
tyson was bigger, faster, stronger, had better defense, hit harder, and had better footwork so why would anyone be sitting on this thread saying dempsey would win???
People like their arguments and love to create them where they already know one shouldn't exist. At the end of the day, if these guys were to actually meet via time travel or whatever mechanism possible, there isn't a single guy here who would put their money on Dempsey, with exception of perhaps Bert Beanstock.
Because not all of the above are true. Tyson was bigger, faster, more durable, and probably hit harder. Dempsey had slightly the better defence, and his footwork was at least equal. Dempsey does bring one significant advantage to the table, and that is the fact that he was a much better infighter. Tyson was only ever really a mid range fighter with short arms, which is why Holyfield handled him so effectively. That for me makes this an interesting fight!
Not true. Dempsey had glaring openings even in his best fights. He bet heavily on his power and ferocity and abandoned his defense. True but it does not outweigh the other gross deficiencies he has compared Tyson.
I agree with you Seamus. But I want to give a shout out to mr. magoo & janitor. You guys are likely the most balanced, restrained & considered posters on the forum, & your integrity, fairness & intelligence really benefits us here. Thank you both. Maybe something about a rare lower case handle, bespeaking humility instead of the Ego/rage monsters we sometimes get here.
I honestly don't think Dempsey makes it out of the first round against Tyson. Horrible match up for the much smaller Dempsey. Like matching Aaron Pryor against Terry Norris.
