Round 1

Williams is rocking backward and twisting his upper body to his right as Gonzalez throws a 1-2. Williams is snipping with the left jab and dropping in a few high whistler rights as Gonzalez steps in with the predictable 1-2. Gonzalez keeps the pressure on but Williams is maneuvering off-line and giving him different looks defensively, working that counter jab. Big 1-2 at the end by Gonzalez, just grazing as Williams leans back.

Round 2

Williams is starting to answer the work rate of Gonzalez, no longer content to wait on him to lead. Williams is throwing hard jabs from chest to chest, making Gonzalez watch the birdie and dropping the payload right up high on the head. Gonzalez is made to back up a bit, arms swaying in simian, ungainly fashion at his sides. Gonzalez tries coming in with the 1-2 and Williams counters with the hard jab and/or the bopping right.

Round 3

Williams is putting jabs out, leaning down to his right, shimmying as he moves back and making Gonzalez miss. Williams catches 1-2s on the upheld right palm and counters with jabs while stepping wide around Gonzalez. Right hand lobbed in solo by Gonzalez, connecting. Another. Williams backs off, arms out to shield.

People do forget that as protected (and mucking up the HW contention picture) as he is, Wilder started out with a real feel-good story that kind of does transcend the sport.

 

Round 4

Williams is blocking and leaning back as Gonzalez throws straight combos moving in. Williams sways to either side with his guard tightened, feeding out jabs at mid-range. Gonzalez lobs in right hands. Williams surges in through a Gonzalez attack, working uppercuts behind the arms with both hands. Gonzalez is backed off. Jay Nady warns both for holding.

He started boxing because of her, and went on to win a bronze medal at the Olympics with very little experience.

It's inspiring even if he had never turned pro. Anything he does now is just gravy.

It makes it hard to hate on him feasting on weak opposition when you realize where the money he is making actually goes.

 

Round 5

Williams is covering up as Gonzalez works the 1-2. Williams is jabbing with him and they're colliding into brief clinches, shoving each other into the ropes while knotted. Big right hand by Williams. Another. Gonzalez holds. Nady splits them. Sneaky 1-2 by Gonzalez. Another 1-2, hitting the back of Williams' head as he ducks.
