The cut off was the issue and it was one upsmen by both sides but Manny didn't say hey no testing what so ever. And Pacquio is no saint by any means he is the catchweight King but when it comes to legacy no one is saying well Manny didn't fight this guy that's what they keep saying about Floyd .
Nice post and I agree 100% with you on pretty much all of it. If he hadn't taken those pseudo-retirements, who knows how many more wins he'd have on his resume (I'd imagine at least 3-4 more.) Every great boxer in history has received criticism and Floyd is no different in that regard. But this whole cherrypicking talk is just nonsensical to me, this is a guy who will end up with around 10 wins on his resume against IBHOF boxers. There's not many GREAT fighters that can stake that claim, even some of the universally recognized top 10 P4P fighters of all time don't have that on their resumes. I wish he took on Pacman a few years ago. I blame both sides though; a fight of that magnitude should've materialized already between them and because of it, it's hurt both of their legacies a little bit. I'm not under the belief that either man is scared to fight each other, but there's obviously a multitude of reasons as to why the fight hasn't happened yet. FOrtunately for both ATG's, they still have an opportunity to fight each other next year. They might be out of their primes, but they're still universally considered to be the top 3 or 4 boxers in the sport and have a lot left in their tanks.
The problem now is that the fight means much more to Floyd's legacy than it does to Pac and therefore a loss is much worse for him than it would be for Pac, so I think he avoids this fight and retires never having fought Pac, cause in his mind that would be preferable to loosing to him.
It doesn't matter whether or not Floyd and Pacquiao fight. Even if the fight DOES happen, people will say that Floyd waited until Pac was shot, even though both of them are past their primes. It will just be seen as happening 5 years too late.
Better late than never in terms of legacy as well. I want to see anybody current P4P that doesn't have Pac in the top 5. Floyd's last fight also revealed the possibility that he will be the one to decline faster than Pac. He is older. Then if they fight I suppose people will excuse Floyd for being past his prime as well.
How does it mean more for FLoyd's legacy than it does Pacman's? I'm just curious to that statement. Roach mentioned in an interview about 2 weeks ago he feels both men have tarnished their legacies equally by not fighting each other. I don't believe they were scared of each other at all, I just think it's hard to sign a deal when you have 2 egocentric alpha males that both truly believe they're the top draw in the sport attempting to negotiate the biggest fight monetarily in the sports history. Both guys are ATG's IMO and I rank them pretty closely as far as ATG rankings. A win for either man even at this stage would elevate their stock at least by a few places in the ATG rankings. It's still a very significant fight. I don't buy into the idea that Pacman is a faded fighter. Aside from getting KO'd in a fight that I thought he was moments away from KO'ing Marquez himself, the guy really hasn't lost in about a decade now (I personally thought he embarassed a prime top 10 P4P fighter in Bradley in both of their matches.)
The problem is whoever looses is going to then say they were past it more than the other guy and swear up and down they would have won if they fought 4-5 years ago and the fans of each will pretty much say the same thing, so it's kind of meaningless, unless Floyd looses because then he'd no longer have his cherished "0" Bottom line is Floyd isn't going to risk loosing his "0" at this point and is going to retire at 50-0 never having fought Pac.
well, floyd is two years older....but based on pac's last 5 fights...he's pretty much at the bradley/marquez level if not a little below that level.
That doesn't explain why he turned down testing request on 4 different occasions from 3 different fighters after Mayweather asked him in 09" most people who think Pac might be on PEDs don't think so because Floyd said so they do because he made excuses to refuse drug testing for 3 yrs. As far as how there viewed Manny is the good guy Floyd is the villian Manny can fight a guy who lost his last fight badly and it's all good, Mayweather has fought people that were unbeaten for almost a decade before fighting him and all you will hear about is how they lost 10 yrs ago. I don't think Manny is on PEDs just catching these guys at low points inversely the only name missing on Mayweather's resume is Pacquiao imo if you compare the names he been in with since retirement and the names the say he didn't fight them guys aren't on the same level take Margarito based on resume, titles won, accomplishments the only guy Tony would have been better than is Ortiz. Theres a reason why Mayweather-Garcia is a bad fight but Pacquiao-Garcia is a big fight.
How's Pacman "shot?" I'm still confused by this statement. He got a bit too careless going for the KO against Marquez and was punished for it big time. Aside from that, what fight has he been in during the past 10 years of his career where he showed clear evidence of being a faded/shot fighter? He did just beat an undefeated prime Bradley twice with veritable ease. I mean isn't that a decent way to gauge how much he has left in the tank? He's still universally considered a top 5 P4P fighter in the sport right now, to use the word "shot" to define who Pacman is at this stage of his career is extremely hyperbolic.
Why do you blame BOTH sides? Floyd is not at fault here at all...it was PACMAN and only PACMAN who refused the test. How does floyd share in that blame? Do you also blame brandon rios for diego chaves being disqualified?
I don't disagree with you, but I still think Floyd has more to loose than Pac. If Pac looses it wouldn't matter all the much. He'd be the clear underdog going into the fight and he already lost against JMM, so the consequences of him loosing aren't that great other than it would clearly elevate Floyd above him. Floyd on the other hand would loose his "0" would be maligned for not fighting him earlier, and would end his career on a very sour note, having suffered his 1st loss just before retirement and Pac would then clearly rank higher than him. Why is he going to risk this outcome when he's spend his whole career avoiding this very possibility?
I'm just saying floyd handled marquez with ease...and BTW, he also handled maidana with ease. I agreed with the judge who called it 9-3 for floyd.
