The Mayweather vs Maidana rematch was the death knell for bigtime PPV boxing in America. Paying $75 for that shitty PPV was nothing short of robbery, no casual fan who paid for that show will buy another one featuring Mayweather unless it's against Pacquiao and i doubt even the boxing hardcore will pay for him to fight the likes Khan or Garcia. I would be amazed if the May-Maidana rematch did more then 800,000, this following on from the first fight which did around 800-900,000 depending on which source you trusted. Pacquiao is in the same boat, his PPV figures have pretty much flatlined since he was KO'd by Marquez and only did 450,000 against Rios and 650,000 against Bradley, i think the Algieri PPV will only do around 500,000 especially as it's in Macau. I'm sure Showtime will be seriously looking at their contract with Mayweather after they see the latest PPV figures and will put their foot down for Mayweather to either fight Pacquiao or no more $32 mill guarantee. It's not even like Mayweather can just go to HBO as they won't want him back either unless it's to fight Pacquiao so Floyd is now stuck and will have to finally man up and fight the man he's been running from since 2010. The only other fights that could draw more then flies at the American PPV market are the following: Cotto vs Canelo Canelo vs Chavez jr Cotto vs Mayweather 2 (for Middleweight title) Pacquiao vs Marquez 5 Outside of the above fights, no other match-ups would sell more then 250,000. With all fights including PPV ones being streamed online and the quality getting better, the days of the PPV model are pretty much over after 2015.
Who care about america ? You do know there's shitload of countrys following boxing, like Canada, England ... ?
Besides, if a 78 dollar price point generates less money for Showtime due to fewer sales, I'm sure they would just lower the price of future PPVs instead of scrapping an entire business model.
It will get less press and media coverage in America simply because it would cost them too much money to fly someone out to Macau to cover it, which ultimately means less people in America especially the casual fan will know or care about the fight.
Well no they can't lower it as they're already in for $32 million to pay Mayweather and between $3-10 mill for his opponent depending on who it is plus cost of rest of undercard so they're already in it for over $40 mill. I don't even think it's the cost of the PPV, fans just want value for money and if they don't get it they'll just watch it for free online.
I'd hope so for the sake of US boxing. It has become a niche sport over there and in my opinion it's mainly because of PPV. It's pretty sad when the #1 P4P and PPV reaches only about 1% of the US population, while in other (much smaller) countries many millions watch their heroes on free (or at least subscription) tv.
The Molina fight prior to the PPV was the best fight of the night next to Angulo:good I was crushed and Floyd going to have fight PAC next or have one barn burning stacked undercard for me to shell out cash again bro:| :smoke
Exactly, it's the reason why boxing is watched by the tens of millions in countries like Mexico, Japan, China, Germany and the Phillipines and has become marginalized in countries like America and the UK despite the occasional big nights like Mayweather-Canelo or Froch-Groves 2.
Now about the fight :bbb Maidana screwed himself by trying to box the number one boxer alive todayatsch WTF was that crap all about bru:huh Then you add in a ref, who in the past has been fair, that was stopping or PREVENTING inside action for Floyd. Lastly you got Floyd showing how great his legs still work as he put on a "Lara Running Man Show" for the fans:-( :smoke
the centre stage is shifting away from the US anyway. Anything below 122 and above 175 isn't happening in the US already. And with the shitload of British prospects coming up, a lot of big fights between the above named weight classes are going to take place in the UK.
Well at some point it only makes sense to lower it. It's better to sell 800k fights at 50 dollars each than to sell 500k fights at 78 dollars each. I'm sure showtime has a team of executives who can figure out what price will generate the most money for them.
Others have made a point I've been making for a while. PPV is killing US boxing. The Yaegashi/Gonzalez fight was on FREE TO AIR in Nicaragua AND Japan, Inoue, Ioka, Hasegawa, The Kameda's and Yaegashi are all featured on Free To Air Japanese TV and all have come through from watching the guys who came before them (Tatsuyoshi being a notable example). In the US Mayweather has been seen by so few prospective fighters that it's a damn shame. Mayweather could have opened up the market to millions of prospective fighters though instead he has filled his pockets at the expense of the sport, the fans and the future of the US fight scene. Well done mate, you've made a **** ton of money but you've also left a void in boxing that will be hard to fill in the next 10-15 years due to the fact your didn't inspire the next generation, the generation that the sport requires to stay relevant.
