Dont like taking a thread away from topic but that last post from Wass made me wonder, did a Bowe fight ever get close for Mike ?...i remember all the debate over a Lewis-Bowe fight and a Tyson -Lewis fight...but not Bowe v Tyson...?
I believe he's an ATG. His ability to master such a style of boxing as D'Amato's peek-a-boo style alone is impressive. Watching him box is something you don't forget. The angles he would throw his shots at was masterful. In his prime he would trouble anybody. Yes, his stamina wasn't so great but most of the time he didn't need that haha. Knocking someone out isn't that easy, especially the amount of time he would do it in.
ali wasn't in his prime when frazier beat him not even close. frazier also wasn't prime when foreman beat him. ali over foreman and lewis over vitali are really the only legitimate ones. horrible post. if u consider tyson an atg then douglas over tyson if u consider tyson in his prime when he got beat
According to Tysons book, Bowe, Newman and one of black reverends (cant remember his name, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton??), visited Tyson just before his release to try and get a fight organised. It doesnt mentioned what happened after. Bowes own comments were that both were from Brownsville and were friends and they decided not to fight. Although there is a video on youtube where Bowe said he felt he would have beaten Tyson. They both went to the same school and Bowe used to call Tyson 'bummy ike' because Tyson was so poor. Type in Bowe/Tyson and there was a number of old articles on both of them. Bowe looked up to Tyson (see end of Holyfield 1 fight). At the Tyson/Ruddock weigh in, Bowe+Newman were cheering Tyson on (video on youtube) and Tyson flashes a hand sign to them. Bowe also made the comment that whenever he saw Tyson approaching, he would cross the street and go in the opposite direction because he never knew what kind of mood Tyson was in. Bowe became a hated figure in Brooklyn and Tyson was always loved I think there was talks of the two of them clashing, once Tyson was released, he was autotmatically catapulted to the top of the divison and Bowe had just stopped Holyfield. So the two of them were seen as the top dogs. But then Tyson loses to Holyfield in 96 and 97 we saw the bite fight. Around the same time Bowe was struggling with Golota and then retired. It would have been a good fight to have in '97-98 i think, a bit of a crossroads fight
You can't brush it under the carpet, not when Puritty was a journeyman with 13 losses on his ledger, never came close to championship level, and Wlad never rematched him. Wlad came into the fight in great shape, could not stop Puritty and got stopped himself when Puritty hit him back. I think you're also forgetting that an over-the-hill Sanders took Wlad apart from the opening bell. What was it? Four knockdowns in two one-sided rounds? That's on the same level as Foreman toying with Frazier. It was an annihilation of epic proportions. The Germans hadn't seen a Blitzkrieg like that since 1940. Funnily enough, no rematch there either. You're as transparent as glass.
Well what Wlad has gone on to do pisses all over what Tyson achieved after suffering from his first loss, funny how we never saw Tyson rematch Douglas either... It's not how you start it's how you finish, Tyson's longevity or record won't hold a candle to Wlad's when he decides to retire, fact!! Thanks for the compliment clown.
Yeah kinda hard when one of them looses in his next fight then retires, well the other went to prison not long after. Their careers never crossed paths again. Rather than rematch the guys who beat him, Wlad left the dirty work to big brother, something Tyson didn't have in boxing. Longevity no. But Wlad never dominated a division like Tyson did even if it was brief. He always had unavenged early losses lingering over his head and a brother who controlled part of the division. Sure he's undisputed at the moment, but also fighting a lot of guys like Leaphai, Pianatta, Mormeck, etc.. His opposition has been terribly bad.
its true that he was prime, but he made a mistake that day and its obvious to see. Nevertheless, it was his mistake not to make, and the loss means his atg status is affected - which is why I find it hard to rate him top five atg and sometimes its easy to drop him just out of the top ten. Long term mental attributes are just as important as early prodigy.
I think you'll find a Douglas didn't retire till 99, why didn't Tyson fight him in a rematch then?? Wlad never dominated a division like Tyson?? Remind me who's made the most title defences in the two of them again?? Tyson didn't avenge one of his losses, the same can't be said for Wlad. Tyson's defences weren't exactly against brilliant fighters in their primes and he got smoked by an average contender in Douglas.
Tyson clearly wasn't interested in boxing after prison, and has admitted as much in interviews. Wlad is just now getting to the business of unification, and has never defended the undisputed title. Tyson did it by age 22, and defended plenty. There is no comparison. Wlad is only recently dominating.
Tyson clearly wasn't bothered about Boxing??? He fought for 10 years after leaving prison, you meant to say Tyson said after that he wasn't interested to try save face.
What did you expect him to do coming out of prison, open a floral business? Tyson was clearly a different man coming out of prison. Prison can change you dramatically.
