No it's not. The fights he picked recently weren't publicly appealing enough. Did Mayweather vs Guerrero do the same numbers as Mayweather vs Maidana I?. Then came the Alvarez fight right after Guerrero and it broke records. A dying business won't see a record breaking PPV only one year ago.
A dying business model is one that dies over time. A freak anomaly doesnt disprove the fact the model is dying. Weird Al getting to #1 doesnt prove comeey music is going to be the in thing. All Canelo/Mayweather did was limit the options for the future. That bout was fought far too early in the Mayweather/Showtime deal. Sort of like shooting your load in round 3 and claiming you'll be fine for the 12th round. To use another boxing analogy every great fighter has one last performancr in them. The Canelo/Mayweather bout is possibly it.
Floyd, for all his 'popularity' should be able to take a dump and have thousands want to pay to see it! Floyd NEEDS a dance partner to do those 1.5 numbers, thats a fact. If Floyd was so damn poplar why didn't Maidana I do 1+ Million buys? The rematch won't do 1 Mill either. You really are underestimating how dead the model is.
Becuase the marketing and promotional monies aren't tied into a US promotional campaign. Those monies and efforts are shifted to the market that's holding the event.
Great point regarding the Canelo-Mayweather fight being too early in the 6 fight deal. They really should have built that fight up as the 5th fight for May 2015 but the Guerrero PPV figures were obviously so low that they bolted the horse and made it much earlier then they wanted to. If Floyd refuses to fight Pac next, expect Showtime to announce they are parting company with him which would pretty much force Floyd into retirement.
I'm not entirely sure if PPV is dying but the fact is that Mayweather isn't all that popular. No one really likes him. People tune in when they think he might lose and I don't think anyone thought bum Maidana could do it.
Can Showtime do that? Can they just end the contract prematurely? Whats the point of a contract then? I'm actually curious not trying to question you. Also I was wondering what in the world showtime was thinking allowing this rematch to be one of the fights.
I'm pretty sure that Showtime would have inserted certain caveats in the contract to allow them a get out clause if needed. If they didn't then they're idiots and heads will roll at Shosports especially Espinoza. They already raised Floyds guarantee to fight Canelo from $32 mil to $40 mil, the $32 was just the lowest guaranteed amount no matter who the opponent was but apart from Pac, i doubt there's any one left he could fight who could break 1 mill PPV's.
Save boxing? Needs a Savior? Mayweather and Nike and Charity? :nut You realize Mayweather is a boxer who gets into a ring to box, and he does that pretty well. He's not your pet/ideal superhero/romanticized boyfriend. And BTW, boxing is doing fine.
And for anyone else who keeps their nose way too close to business they know nothing about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leader Showtime is fine.
This is a SPORT, not a beauty pageant. Me, and many boxing fans, watch for the SPORTING aspect. Not a popularity show and not to see who represents what and who donates how much to whom. This is a SPORT, and Mayweather is an EXCEPTIONAL talent and is clearly skilled enough to be the best fighter in the world. He earned it, and so he deserves it. His job is to box, not to impress you or your friends or the general public. Tyson wasn't a great "representative" either, neither was Ali (at the time for white America), and many other greats in the past.
He doesn't have a Nike contract because he beats women. He isn't on ESPN all the time because he beats women. He doesn't have a boxing video game because he wastes all his money and has nothing to invest. He doesn't speak about causes because he only believes in money. All of his charity he does is a joke/for tax purposes and ends up on 24/7 so he can try to make people forget he beats women, has 4 or 5 ******* children, and still hangs around with wannabe gang-bangers and hoe's who wouldn't talk to him if he was broke.
No but they caught the imagination of a worldwide public, for a big part because of their charisma (be it in completely different ways) and to be actually broadcasted on tv for anyone to see. Another big part of course was because they were heavyweights and thus seen as the baddest men on the planet, while Floyd is merely a Welter wich of course isn't even remotely as impressive. But the fact Floyd is behind PPV, and not quite commercial material makes him a complete unknown for most of the public
