what was so great about him? i just watched some of his highlights and there's not much to him at all: average speed, suspect chin, mediocre defense, etc. i think tyson would have beaten him. am i missing something?
Joe Louis has the best resume in heavyweight history. If you dont think he looked good on film, then it says more about your ability to judge fighters based on film than anything else. At the end of the day, there is no arguingwith results.
Actually lol'd when I read the thread title. No offense. Nah man, Louis was special. Maybe you need to watch more of him, read a couple of books, watch a few documentaries. Sad when such a talent as so easily dismissed nowadays.
for one ali has the most impressive resume louis is rated so highly because he was an american hero who beat the nazis however i rate him very highly due to his number of defenses
I have no hesitation in calling Louis the greatest of all Heavyweights. I still haven't seen anyone with his power and variety; he had every punch in the book and was exciting, too. How anyone can say that Louis is nothing special simply beggars belief.
A very odd statement to make. Louis was an amateur star of whom great things were expected from the get-go, long before he met Schmeling. For me he is highly rated for more obvious reasons: career legacy and talent. I think he did broaden his appeal with his victory over Schmeling, his enlistment into the armed forces and his statement that 'we're going to win because we're on God's side.' (Which may have actually been misread by Louis. There is speculation that the actual words to the speech were 'We're going to win because God is on our side.') Of course, we cannot forget what he represented to the black people of the US as well and what he did not only for their esteem and morale, but for black sports stars that were to follow later. Louis opened a lot of doors for future generations. More so than Ali did, if I'm honest.
