It is hard to say that anybody around the same weight would "probably have beaten him".

    He was that good.

I think hagler would've (or at least could've) steamrolled robinson at middle, too much physical strength and power and a southpaw stance too.
But I have to say its hard to fairly judge robinson as theres not much footage from his welterweight days

lamotta was bigger and stronger than hagler, the physical strength has nothing to do here. leonard would have beaten hagler also prime for prime

I think Fitz, Hagler, Monzon, Greb would start favourites. I also think many other middles would fancy their chances

At welterweight, i am not so sure. If i had to pick someone, i am thinking that a young San Langford might be the best chance. If nothing else, he has a punchers chance.

I put lamotta a level or 3 below hagler and its debatable whether he was bigger or stronger, but what hagler definitely had much more of was ability.

Robinsons bogey man Randolph turpin had that combination of size, an unusual rhythm and a booming jab but hagler was a southpaw and much more skilled and much more deadly.

I don't agree that leonard would've got anywhere near hagler in his prime and he knew it

Everyone from McFarland to Leonard are lightweights (Pep is a featherweight). Small ones too... I can't see them beating a guy that dominated a light heavyweight.

Anyway, I do agree with Roy and the other Sugar Ray. Can't agree with Hopkins but I wouldn't be shocked.

I wanna throw in Hagler and Hearns.

At middleweight only Monzon might be favored .. of course Greb and several others make a very interesting fight and might win but I don't see them favored ...

I am a massive Hagler fan but Marvin would not steamroll Robinson. The fight would go to a points decision because both had great chins. You are right about Robbie being better at a lower weight, though.

    Let's look at a 47-48 Duran vs. a 47-48 Robinson.
    Let's look at a 79-80 Duran vs. a 79-80 Robinson.
    Eras jd, eras!
IMHO Robinson showed us all who the greatest was, bar none.
Let Duran, Leonard, Hearns, etc...etc...fight once a month for 12 years straight and you'll see a goodly handful of losses scattered thruout.
After brutalizing LaMotta in the St. Valentine's Day beatdown his record was: 131-1-1.
Retired and came back as an old man (in those days, tho consider the number of rounds fought prior) with some of the greatest MW bouts ever!
    Next thread please...
