Andrade will be carrying the WBO title in a month or so, and in beating Korobov will ALSO have won against an excellent fighter. Hopefully he makes more solid defenses than he did at LMW, and than Quillin did at MW.:-(

You beat a champion that was the favorite on paper, even if there are mitigating circumstances, you're legit. Plenty of champions in history reigned over divisions where someone might have been considered a better fighter, or the premiere player in the weight class. Doesn't mean that their claim to the throne was illegitimate.

I generally reserve the term for fighters who gain world title belts in a division when the reigning champion is stripped of a title after unification. So Ruslan Chagaev certainly qualifies as a paper champ, given this criteria.

If a fighter takes a belt from a belt holder then he should be considered a champion. He may not be the best champion in that particular division but he is still a champion. If two fighters fight for a vacate title and there is no tournament attached, then that's a paper title.
