Guys who would have probably beaten Ray Robinson

I dont understand why you've got smaller men beating SRR.
    Pep's a natural feather ffs.

There is no footage of prime Ray or B Leonard to judge them imo. Rays naturally bigger so you have to chose him.

Gans and Duran in their primes are as gifted as SRR but again they are smaller so you have to favour Robinson.

SRL is a good fight so is the mega skilled Jose Napoles. Napoles would get ko'd though. He was too inconsistant. SRL-SRR is a points affair. Two of them have Iron chins. If Hearns had chin I would strongly favour him to beat Robinson.

Plenty middles could beat Robinson. Monzon, Hagler, Steele, Jones and Greb are hard fights for the smaller past prime SRR. I would pick Robinson to beat Hopkins and Toney and he Probably sparks Jones. Robinson as a middle is kinda overrated on boxing forums tbh. Still a formidable force though.

James Toney would've have been to slick for SRR to hit cleaningly! SSR had a habit of throwing long straight punches, easily countered by toney had one the best chins to. SRR would have to go to the body of James Toney like Mike, did in his previous fight against James Toney. Going upstairs On Tony would leave you stretching in and off-balance according to Freddie roach Tony did have a good right-hand. James used to roll his head from shoulder to shoulder making it very difficult to get short flurries on him. Toney was an excellent body puncher and couldve easily taken the wind out of sugar Ray Robinson's legs.

I'm not sure Napoles would be KO'd. He was legitimately stopped once, well past his best, when he had a face full of claret and was resting on his laurels.

All his other stoppages were due to cuts.

Other than Monzon of course. Which was a ludicrous matchup between a small welterweight (even in that era) versus a big middleweight (for that era)

Yes, as an amateur in some dirty attic while being outweighed by 130 pounds. Pep didn't know who he was fighting and was told they guy was no good. Robinson was actually an amateur champion in the state of New York at the time.
Its ridiculous to fantasy match those two imo. Pep said Robinson was all over him, it would have been worse as a pro. The size difference is just too much.

Wasn't Napoles actually a natural lightwelter who only moved up because the bigger fights were at welterweight? Cant believe he fought Monzon at middle when he was past his best. Its kind of like Duran fighting Hagler or Hearns. Just ridiculous but also admirable even though highly unwinnable. They don't make them as brave as that any more.

The feeling in '73 was that Napoles would make Monzon look like a complete fool...a cigar store indian...The boxing "brains" of the time were really hot for this fight and thought that Napoles was a shoo-in to beat the great Monzon. It was a very anticipated matchup and the boxing mags of the time, esp Boxing Illustrated devoted a huge expanse detailing and analyzing this fight. Sports Illustrated, which back in '74, was actually a very good magazine regarding boxing, had a very good write up of the actual fight. Ali fought and beat guys with even greater size advantages. Monzon just did his job in a very cool, detached sort of way. He didn't even start opening up on Jose until the last full round of the bout. These were my two favorite fighters of the 70's, along with Ken Buchanan.

Red. good posting! Rossco, Napoles wasn't passed his best when he fought Monzon and as Red wrote many thought his superior boxing skills would make him the favorite over Carlos and at times in their bout it looked like it might go that way, however Monzon found an opening for his right hand and kept landing it until the stoppage. It wasn't a mismatch just a good bigger man beating a good smaller one.

I think the intention is to match middleweights with SRR, or at least that is my understanding of the thread.

    130lbs? :huhWas Robinson over 200lbs?

Napoles was 2 months off 34 years old. He was past his best, and it was a mismatch.

"Carlos Monzon successfully defended his world middleweight title Saturday by beating welterweight champion Jose Napoles. The Argentine champion, using a 5 inch reach advantage and the power behind a 6 3/4 pound weight edge, pummeled Napoles viciously in the 5th and 6th rounds, then won the bout when the Cuban-born challenger who fights out of Mexico City failed to answer the bell for the 7th round of the scheduled 15 round fight. Napoles apeared unable to seriously threaten Monzon. It was only in the 1st round when he slipped a left jab through Monzon's guard and twice scored with looping rights to the head that Napoles looked like he might seriously challenge Monzon." -Associated Press "

Wasn't it Eddie Futch who said,

" Ray Robinson did things in the ring I've never seen before or since" ?

His words of wisdom will do fine for me.

    Prime Calzaghe clowns SRR.

Too much workrate, too much handspeed, too good of a chin, SRR wins two rounds tops.
