I feel its a wind up thread because he seems to be dismissive regardless of whats put in front of him. Louis is 50/50 for me, sometimes ill read the opinions of posters and maybe look at him from a different angle and appreciate. My one major gripe with Louis (i might get some stick for this), but his feet were awfully slow. However maybe im being influenced by what Ali said in his book (about Louis), about poor footwork.
They weren't slow. Louis' footwork and hence style was based entirely off the ability to punch with authority at all times when in range. That is why he had that shuffling style. But even so, he could dart in very quickly if he needed to. I would say that Louis overall had very good footwork. When Louis first started boxing, he had a different style...dancing on the balls of his feet and moving more. If I recall correctly, it was Holman Williams who turned Louis into a shuffling destroyer and nobody can argue with the results he achieved. Louis' knockouts have an almost comicbook-like quality to them, and that I believe is because he hit people so cleanly. This was made possible because he could hit lethally with either hand when in range, and you need good balance and good footwork for that.
This super huge heavyweights blah-blah sucks. 5'11" Chagaev beat Valuev,Haye beat Valuev. Valuev was a much more bigger fighter than Lewis, klitschkos etc. Otherwise this 200 pounds Louis is incorrect: For example Louis' weights were 206,208,216 or 218 lbs also. He was several times heavier than 200 pounds. Your overrated super huge heavies: Obviously w.klitschko is heavier than 200- 210 pounds.A 210 lbs body is very skinny for a 6'6"heavyweight. Basically Wladimir Klitschko(skinny legs, neck) isn't super huge.He was 243 pounds against Haye. A 243 pounds for a 6'6" fighter isn't super huge. (F.Bruno maybe a weak 6'3" he was a ripped 247 pounds against Tyson. Tyson destroyed him easily.) The 196 pounds Louis could knock the 261 pounds Carnera out. The weight wasn't problem for Louis. -V.Klitschko? The about 211 pounds Byrd beat the 244 pounds vitali. And where are Byrd's punching power from Louis'? What's vitali's best win?The 38 years old(maybe asthma problematic) Briggs by points. The 38 years old fat, unathletic 38 years old Sanders? But the 37 years old(nearly 38) out of shape Lennox was too much for him. -Basically the prime Foreman wasn't super huge. I think the older Foreman was super fat . -Lewis was a glass-chinned a clumsy fighter. His punching power is overrated. The "big" Lewis (at least 235 pounds wasn't impressive at all) The at least 235 pounds Lewis had 18 wins 2 losses 1 drawn and only 10 power ko. -Bowe? Do you wanna fool us? The mediocre Golota outclassed him two times. His best wins the 205 and 213 pounds 6'2.5" ? Holyfield. But the 217 pounds Holyfield was too much for him. I think Bowe was glass-chinned and clumsy.Maybe Golota was his hardest puncher opponent and Bowe was crap.Joe Louis was one of the hardest puncher ever. Bowe's power is ****ing overrated. Maybe Mathis said:"Tyson has the power, Bowe has the skill" I think Joe Louis had the power and skill,Bowe had the big nothing. Klitschkos,Bowe aren't/weren't great fighters. It's not hard too imagine a winner Joe Louis against vitali, wladimir,Bowe, the slow(easy to hit) Foreman or the glass-chinned, clumsy Lennox. I can imagine easily. The heaviest fighter who beat Joe Louis was 192 pounds. His 238,250,255,261 pounds opponents were victims. Who was super huge fighter? Valuev by fat and abnormal height. But maybe he was the worst cherry-picker ever. "Tyson was a great fighter" by you. What an intelligent opinion ! I hope you can imagine we know this without your "legendary" boxing knowledge.
I'm abit stunned by what you didn't see Sugah. Very fast hands when thrown in short combinations and at his best a very fast lead right. Every punch in the book thrown and thrown perfectly by the book, singularly and in combination. Explosive one punch ko power in both hands to the head and body. Aside from Liston perhaps the hardest thrown left jab among the heavy kings. However I do agree he had a suspect chin and a mediocre defense and would have had to nail Tyson fast with his best right hand if he wanted to avoid being stopped by Mike.
Dont bother responding to him, OP is a troll who's been banned numerous times. This is one of his usual tactics
He was. Do you even fully understand what that means? Ali did most things wrong. He got away with it and scaled the heights of greatness that he did in spite of that because he was a physical athletic marvel and had a very high ring IQ (along with other innate traits both tangible and intangible), and in part not only in spite of but actually because he eschewed the norm, since his style worked so well for him (whereas it wouldn't for most others attempting to adopt it, because most people are not Ali) - but in terms of doing things in the conventional, teachable, "correct" manner he generally didn't and Louis did. In terms of applied, by-the-book skill, Louis is a textbook paragon example whereas Ali is the opposite. This is common knowledge, actually.
Well said. I think thats why Ali and Louis are both on top of most lists. One guy did everything picture perfect, the other did everything wrong. Both were sucessful.
Joe Louis, would be one of the few heavyweights who would be on a list of the 20 greatest fighters of all time. Besides being one of the greatest punchers in heavyweight history, he is probably its greatest finisher. If Joe got you in trouble, you were done. I always liked the quote describing Louis. "He was a credit to his race...The human race". Just a great fighter obviously.
