I find it strange though you don't hear of many pro bodybuilders dying of heart attacks, I wonder why that is??
Bodybuilders arent on the road 300 days a year, performing every night while hurt... often very hurt, taking whatever uppers, downers and pain pills necessary to keep going lest their place be taken by another.
I dont know, there have been a lot of suspicious bodybuilding illnesses and fatalities. From Arnold's two heart surgeries to Ed Corney's health issues, to Nasser El Sonbaty's death to Mike Mentzer and Ray Mentzer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WD9e1R_Tg-M Bodybuilders drop dead all the time there just arent as many famous bodybuilders are there are wrestlers so you dont typically hear from them. I think Arnold would have been dead years ago if he didnt have half a billion dollars in the kitty to pay for the best medical care.
Right on, & sometimes guys even die of dehydration. Pro bodybuilders-like NFL players-have disproportionate health problems & tend to kick off early.
Great thread and discussion. I've took part in sport all my life and have always had a good physique.I boxed as an amateur and still work out now 3 or 4 times a week.My body looks GOOD ,with decent muscle definition and a (fairly) flat stomach...but it doesn't look GREAT. The reason it doesn't look great is because i don't consume anythin that is an 'added extra' in any shape or form. The human body can only look good to a certain degree by natural means.Whether it's Rugby,NFL or boxing or even the guy at your local gym with the biceps that look like breast implants etc..they all do it,the only thing debatable for me is the levels of usage. Boxing, yes deffo in the modern era. Look at Holyfield and how he developed physically..he would be a definite for me. Look at Tyson now.If you walked past him now he would not look imposing at all.Just a 5ft 10 man with a normal build now weighing comfortably under 200 pounds. These 'extras' though are very bad for health in the long term.Artery clogging is one effect.Staying healthy is hard enough without adding to normal problems. I suppose if it's your job then it is easy to get sucked in if most others are doing it. In summary it's just my view that you simply cannot possibly look like some of these sports people do, without artificial 'help'.
If, and its a big if, Tyson weighs under 200 lbs it has a lot more to do with the fact that at that age you its harder to keep muscle on, you lose it, it breaks down, and hes on a vegan diet to boot. BUT, last week when Tyson almost killed that Canadian tv host he looked pretty damn good to me and I doubt he weighed much less than 220/230. He fought, briefly, in the amateurs at 200 because he was forced to if he wanted to get a berth on the Olympic team. Tyson was a monster even as a 13 year old, I dont think the guy needed steroids. Furthermore his weight rarely fluctuated and even steroid king Holyfield noted that Tyson worked harder than anyone else even when he was kid.
Franky boy....Mikey weighs in now at around 190 and just looks like an average (with a polynesian tatoo on his face)kind of guy. His weight fluctuates with his various addictions but for the last 2 years he says he has followed a 'vegan' lifestyle and has lost alot of weight.
If you think about it a guy who is 5 ' 10 and isnt weight training 2 hours a day ,isnt eating steaks and carbs and isn't on Ped's of any kind, can't possibly weigh over 200 pounds unless he is a junk food slob. If you are 5'10 and lead a vegan lifestyle with reasonable excercise you will weigh less than 200 comfortably. Once past the age of 40-45 muscle mass just doesn't sustain without concerted and consistent effort.Any drop off in training soon shows itself. I saw recent pictures of him recently and he just looked a regular fit looking guy for his age . Put it this way....if he pushed in at the grocery checkout i would happily throw an elbow into his face and say "that's for all those fouls you did against Tyrell you convicted ****** you "......( before anyone responds ..only joking)....but yes he looks a regular guy in fact in a jumper and jeans he looks very slim. Nice to see him leading a calm life.Hope it lasts.
Great thread and level of discussion. PED's are everywhere today, but they were available even at 50's - 60's (though they weren't as effective back then). Still there are many naive people who think that Brock Lesnar and Bob Sapp are so big just because they eat a lot of meat and train properly.
I don't believe Lesnar was juicing whilst he was in the UFC, he wasn't super ripped but neither was he obese but he was still huge, a good 260lb.
Where is your evidence that Tyson weighs 190. Just saying it doesnt make it so. Last November he said he weighed 240 and still looks pretty big here: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3dOzLdCkl2U/TUCUEX5JkBI/AAAAAAAAFao/lz0HlkkQPTU/s1600/Mike-Tyson-s-Wife-Is-Pregnant-2.jpg Besides, who tries to say a 5'10" person cant weigh 220 naturally? My former training partner was 5'10" and weighed 210 and didnt look half as big as Tyson does now. Either way a guy doesnt need to take steroids to see a dramatic loss of muscle: Here is Jack Johnson at 30. Everything deteriorates with age, but many athletes lose mass & fitness just due to not caring about staying in top, or sometimes even good, shape. Yes with a vegan diet & less lifting Tyson could be much smaller. Don't know that he is. Though you do not need to work out 2 hours a day, & in fact an hour or less is usually recommended as most effective. Also to maintain near your muscle, one can potentially lift heavy just once every week to 10 daaaze. not the same fitness, but most mass-or more frequent short workouts. At a certain point you will lose mass due to lowering testosterone levels, but potentially until your 60's you can keep most of your mass While core abilities declone, but muscle has memory. At 49 I lift once a week & am not far from where i was-no world beater-& though have lost more on the bench press, still can press 300 free weight. I never would take even Creatine (the levels you consume cannot be gotten naturally, so like a PED). Now the levels you reach with PEDS you cannot maintain off them, even if dosing gives you some permanent changes. I met Tyson & he looks his listed just under 6', squat, fighting crouching & his opponents taller made him look smaller. YES, natural guys can get to 210 or so, 220 "bulked" with food/eating much/many times a day...And more with a large bone structure. At say 15% boidy fat, though most have more than they think. Here is a realistic view of what is achievable POTENTIALLY naturally, I mean the lifetime outer limit. Many great articles on the other tabs on the left.
