In your lifetime, which Brit winning a world title suprised you the most?

Well Marvin Hagler did!

Hagler saw Burns make his pro-debut and said Burns was a natural and would become a World champion.

 

Yup burns is the luckiest boxer by far...lucky git won a world title...if he was any good genuinely he would hav won more...if he was really really lucky he would hav won at two weights...errrr wait...how how many years has he luckily held a world title for again...lol haters gonna hate!

Nobody is going to deny Burns was limited in terms of silky skills, but so what? So is Froch. They make up for it in will. :good

 

Honeyghan is probably the biggest single fight surprise, as he was fighting one of the top 2 p4p fighters in the world. He was considered to have a good shot at winning a title at some point though, just not against Curry.

Like Robinson, Jason Matthews is another late sub who won a vacant world title against a favoured domestic opponent.

Very few people had Johnny Nelson, Glenn McCrory, Dennis Andries, Clinton Woods or Junior Witter down as future world champions early on in their career. However, the actual title wins weren't a huge surprise when they happened.

Add Silky Jones to the list.

 

Strange choice to add SSM and Castillo as examples of great lightweights when lightweight is stacked with much greater lightweights than both. Joe Gans, B Leonard, Carlos Ortiz, Ike Williams, Tony Canzoneri, Henry Armstrong, Barny Ross, Freddie Welsh, Packey Mcfarland, Beau Jack, Barney Ross, Sammy Agnott, Battling Nelson, Lou Ambers, Ismael Laguna, Ken Buchanan, etc, etc. Your other choices are top notch :good but Castillo and Shane wouldn't crack the top 20 great lightweights.

 

Glenn Catley away in Germany against the unbeaten Markus Beyer certainly raised a few eyebrows at the time.

 

Silky Jones wasn't a surprise! Jones was a great fighter who had very fast feet.

 

For most of us, it probably doesn't class as in our lifetime, but Randy Turpin's win over Sugar Ray Robinson would've been huge.

Did you have Ricky Hatton down as a future world champion early on in his career?

Early on in Junior Witter's career he fought Zab Judah for the world title on very late notice and did really well. It was only a matter of time before Witter became World champion. Witter was better than Ricky Hatton.
