In your lifetime, which Brit winning a world title suprised you the most?

I liked him as a fighter and think he was under-rated. However, he was a big underdog against Phillips, and when he got beat by Wesley I don't think many would have predicted he would resurface a few years later and win a world title.

No he didn't, it was on Tyson v Saverese undercard, I was about 5m from the ring, and the entire undercard was awful but the Witter track meet, sorry fight was the worst.

Witter was very awkward, but never better than Hatton.

Hatton was heavily hyped by Sky very early on in his pro career. A lot of people were predicting big things for him long before he mixed in world class. Other than the cuts problem early on, he was seen by many as the most likely up and comer to become a world champion.

Bergman's people wouldn't have touched Witter with a bargepole if he had been perceived as a major threat. He obviously turned out to be far better than expectations (at least expectations outside the Ingle camp).

No comment about who was the better fighter, but Hatton was far more hyped and had far greater expectations early on in his career.

Honeyghan/Curry is the stand out, although I was born when Stracey went to Mexico and shocked Napoles.

But I guess those born in the 40s or earlier, can top that with Turpin upsetting the Sugar Man.

 

Gavin Rees a good 1 I had £10 on 10/1 for him to win that . Stuart Hall Clinton woods were a shock for me

You're missing the point about the Bergman fight. Witter beat him yet he only had a handful of fights. It was written in the stars that Witter would become World Champion one day...And he did!

As for Hatton the only reason he had far greater expectations than Witter was because he was a cross over star to the casuals and non boxing fans. Everybody got behind Hatton. :good

 

Aye, it was at Hampden. I was there too in the cheap seats!
Anyway Witter did do really well that night against Judah considering he came in at very late notice and he was only in his 3rd year as a pro and had only done 8 rounds once or twice up until then. Witter done well!

As for Witter-Hatton, Hatton and his people knew Witter was all wrong for them. I mean Team Hatton knew what would have happened - that's why they avoided Junior Witter like the bubonic plague!!
