Lewis ran from his biggest challenge? :rofl Who the hell did he run from? Lewis faced everyone, period! And this coming from a Golota fan who never quite forgave him for the beating he unleashed on poor Andrew that ill-fated day in October 1997. :smoke
Yep. He retired to avoid rematching Vitali. Common knowledge. Lennox was KO'd by crackhead McCall, and Rahman. Lennox has a worse chin than either Wlad, or Vitali.
:rofl:rofl You're a good joker. He retired because he was 38, not to avoid Vitali. He already TKO'd Vitali. :deal Lewis had nothing more ever to prove. He beat the most promising HW rising in the ranks. And left on a beautiful note. :bbb
He beat an unprepared Vitali by a cut stoppage while behind on all 3 cards.... He wouldn't have been able to do that against a more prepared Vitali in a rematch, and he knew it.... Which is why he ran away with his tail between his legs, and not only lost out on a major payday, but also robbed boxing fans of a great fight.
Lewis is ridiculously overrated by many modern boxing fans. He remains the only HW champ KOd twice in the early rounds by fighters on the level of McCall and Rahman when he held the title. And he didn't face Holyfield and Tyson until they were past their best. His chin was his chief weakness. He deserves credit for overcoming its fragility, but the fact his, his whiskers would have likely let him down in matches against other ATGs. Just like they did against McCall and Rahman.
Err I beg to differ Lennox BEAT Vitali TKO in 6 When he was only 80% in shape Imagine what he'd do to him at 100% As for timid Wlad? He had the chance to challenge Lennox after the Vitali KO but he sorta went into hiding didn't he Lennox retired at exactly the right time & on his terms. He had nothing left to prove. He beat every man that got in the pro ring with him. In my book he is second only to Ali:happy:happy:happy
38 is pretty old for sports, but Lennox started professional boxing at 24 and only had 44 fights, most of them easy fights (didn't take much damage.) He could of fought a few more times but his mother made him retire.
Wlad wasn't really doing well at the time. Lennox did the right thing and gave Vitali his chance. It's Vitali's fault that he couldn't close the show out properly. Now a rematch would have been fun for us, but Lennox was under no moral obligation to go double or nothing with Vitali. Vitali deserved a shot, he got it, and he lost. End of story.
No doubt in my mind if he beat Vitali easy or the Kirk Johnson fight happened he wasn't retiring He realized he had a real threat on his hands and he wasn't motivated to train He probably could have stayed a few more years but the public demand was for Klitschko and he didn't want to have to do it again
Ran away after he TKO'd Vitali and punched a gaping vagina in his face? :rofl Vitali came in fully prepared. Lewis was at 50% at box.... nowhere near ready after Tyson. Fat/underprepared/undermotivated/under the weather and still enough to beat Vittles. :deal
He's a legit top 10 Heavyweight all time. Is the 5th round an "early round" or a "middle round"? Regardless, you fail to mention that he avenged both of those decisively. Hardly his fault now, is it? Tyson and Holyfield didn't face each other until they were past their best, too. I think he matches up very well against many all time greats. He would lose some, but he would probably win more than he lost. His chin was far from great, but I think it tends to get underrated because of the 2 KO losses. He has otherwise stood up to some pretty nice shots without losing his head. He could maintain his composure when tagged good in many cases. Some times it is the punches you do not see coming that really get you, and I think that was the variety of shot that Rahman and McCall nailed him with (although I think he foolishly overlooked Rahman and paid the price dearly).
