It's not running if you retire. If he had stayed and fought other fighters you would have a point, but that's not what happened, he retired after beating the crap out of Vitali, so if that's ducking I guess it was a truck that hit Vitali cause he sure as hell was hit with something.
Stop distorting history, it was Lennox that got his ass kicked and outboxed by Vitali. A lucky cut opened up from a grazing right hand by Lewis in round 3 were the seam of the glove cut Vitai's eye. Lewis was down 4-2 on all judges scorecards and was looking completely finished and demoralized at the end of round 6. Jim Lampley: "A lucky escape for Lennox Lewis" Lewis was a great champion but ducking the southpaw Chris Byrd (Lewis wouldn't fight southpaws) holding the title ransom for a year while making up pathetic excuses to stall negotiations and ultimately retiring right before he was stripped of his title did tarnish his legacy a bit.
Lewis could have went on, but shouldn't have. He was 37 at the time of the last fight. Holyfield before 38th birthday had only 4 losses. He carried on till 48 and added 6 more losses to his resume. Most of HW champions and beltholders retire well after 40. Foreman and Holy fought at 48, Holmes at 52. Witherspoon, Smith, Berbick, Weaver, Seldon, Page, Coetzee, Tubbs all were still fighting in their 40's and suffered few more losses. So in Lennox went on till 45 he would've lost few more times. He retired at the best time for his health and his win-loss record.:good
Lewis had nothing left to prove. He had already cleaned out the HW division, and was the undisputed champion.
Lewis didn't want any Byrd or Klit, he could only get up for Johnson. Once he was denied the opportunity to lick that fat Johnson, he lost the urge, he couldn't get up anymore, he retired.
Yeah, big fight in Canada and an easy fight where he wouldnt have to train too hard. Sounds like the perfect send off. He knew he was getting old and past it, and he retired at the right time
Not after he lost the IBF strap for ducking #1 contender Chris Byrd. He technically wasn't undisputed anymore after he was stripped of his WBA title for not fighting Ruiz but I'll let that slide because he took the bigger payday to fight Grant.
No one needs clinch-stats. Even as a fan of Wladimir you just need to take a brief glimpse at one of his fights to see that he clinches a lot. It's plain stupid to claim otherwise. Still a great fighter though...
Anyone who criticises Lewis are just bitter Americans because they haven't had a decent heavy in years!
All anyone needs to do is have actually watched boxing and know its history to know its true. But hey, at least you have the goods sense to not try and argue he's not one of the most boring champions ever.
