i think the decline started in the mid 70's. however i think Holmes slowed the decline. Tyson saved it from completely dying when he came on the seen. Great fighter. Never seen anything like him. If only he kept his head clear he would've had another decade of terror. The 90's saw the heavyweight division regain new life, not as great as the mid-60's to early 70's but it was greater than it had been in a long time. when lewis retired the heavyweight division came to an absolute low point. it became the era of unknown champions. Now We are in the klitschko era much better than the era of unknown champions i'll tell you that however the heavyweight division is nothing like it was 40-45 years ago. just wanna see fellow ESB posters opinions on the timeline of the heavyweight division decline.

Perhaps what you are referring to is a decline in North American heavyweights?

I don't see any reason why it cant be strong again in the future, but it is likley to depend on how other centres develop.

Yeah you're right, if Tyson could have avoided fighting Douglas and got a 10 stretch he might have stayed unbeaten till the 2000's.

No you misunderstood me. if he stayed away from the king cronies and stopped himself from falling apart he would have had another decade of terror as he did in the 80's he also would've beaten douglas.

Im sorry but I'm not having that at all, the man would have met his match in Douglas either way IMO.

The 90's was the best decade the division ever saw. Today's talent is vastly underrated, as most eras areby contemporary commentators.

Please tell me how a commited, focused, young, and hungry Tyson would lose to Douglas. Messed up Tyson almost knocked him out. Well he actually DID knock him out but Douglas got a long count by the ref.

Well i don't think he would have tbh, he was thoroughly outfought from the opening round and dismantled in devastating fashion.

In the 70's you had a past prime Ali, Foremen, Frazier, Norton and Holmes which by any account is pretty damn good.

In the 90's you had Holyfield, Bowe, Ruddock, Lewis, Tyson.

So it nothing else it's pretty damn close. I would say there were bigger bangers in the 90's if nothing else.

Tyson was Tyson, no way did he have enough discipline to last another 10 years under any circumstance. Add that to the fact his fighting style alone has a short shelf life and it is what it is. He probably could have beaten Douglas but never Holyfield at the point in his career.
