What are you talking about? My post wasn't addressing anyone specifically, I'm asking if anybody who is reading this thread knows anthing about Red Applegate. You keep wanting to make him a talking point but there doesn't seem to be enough information available on him to draw any sort of conclusion from the Marciano fight.
I raised the name Applegate because he was a non-entity with a 12-16-2 record,who had just 2 fights in the previous 2 years when he faced Marciano. From the report it would seem that,[not for he first time ,]Marciano won this with his superlative condition. "This was a bruising, crowd-pleasing battle. Marciano won handily enough but failed to even knock down his opponent, who had fought only twice in the previous two years. Applegate's best round was the third, which the referee also took from Marciano because of a low punch. Red landed plenty of good punches, typically in the early parts of rounds, but Marciano almost always came back later to take the play away. Marciano's best round was the sixth. The attendance was 4167 and the gross gate was $7,6l6" Was any fighter ever better conditioned? I said I know nothing about Red Applegate if I did ,I wouldn't have asked you ,you could maybe have taken that as a clue? This is fun!:happy
Thats silly because it doesn't address the original question,which ,just to refresh your memory is ,was Marciano a dynamite one punch ko artist ,and my stance is that he wasn't. Your question is irrelevant because : 1. It has nothing to do with the thread . 2. Marciano was only under 185lbs 4 times in his last 24 fights and they are spread over 5 years! Two of those were against Walcott and he was only half a pound under.The others were the first Lastarza fight ,and the Louis fight. 3.Marciano was the heavier man in 3 of his title defences and in the fight previous to his title challenge he was 8.5lbs heavier than Mathews! But ,as I have the prospect of a very nice day in front of me, I shall venture some names that were around Rocky's size Sam Langford Bob Fitzsimmons Bob Satterfield Tommy Gomez Yvon Durelle Jack Dempsey Max Schmeling Curtess Sheppard Archie Moore Joe Choynski Iron Hague Tom Sharkey That's a dozen 2 more than you asked for,
You might like to ask yourself how many times Marciano made 185 lbs when he was prime let alone weigh under it?:think

Archie Moore said Durelle hit harder than Marciano that's a decent endorsement. Have you seen Gomez? Think carefully before you answer. Gomez has 65 kos in 75 fights for a near 75%ko record ,he was a serious 180lbs banger If, as you say, you have seen Hague v Langford you would agree with my pick, he was a monster puncher.
None of these guys wrecked other fighters, or hit as hard as Rocky. If you were to post a poll, you see 90% plus picking Rocky...in any forum. Archie Moore was an interesting cat for sure, but he also said he should have beaten Marciano. What a joke! If your going to quote Moore in this thread, I suggest you use " I'm like the drunk in the bar who wants just one more for the road. 20+ pages worth of beatings...and you want more!
I sense people want to down grade a knockout punch due to size. a cruiserweight will knockout a super heavyweight if he gets the right connection. Joe Louis was under 200lb for some of the best knockouts he produced. Being heavier makes more impression with regular punches but the actual knockout punch will do the same job. There is no doubt in my mind that the left hook that Floyd Patterson knocked ingo Johansson out with would have knocked out Lennox Lewis and Riddick Bowe. That's not to say Floyd necessarily beats Lewis and Bowe because he has an awful lot to deal with before reaching their chins with the most perfect punch of his career. But it is saying if Floyd makes the same connection with the same punch it will do the same job on both guys.
