Matthew Macklin: Is he a bum?

People always make it seem as if Macklin is a top tier boxer, but over the years I've never seen any hint of substance to validate these claims.

Golovkin easily stopped him in 3

Martinez made him quit in 11

    Strum won a SD

He just won a MD over low B level Jose Yebes

This guy appears to me to just be a stepping stone for up and coming fighters.
He reminds me of another B levell fighter, Magee who Lucien Bute beat and the Bute fans acted as if he had beaten James Toney.

Why does Golovkin get a "Great" pass for defeating this low level of opposition?

I thought he got absolutely hosed against Sturm. A couple close rounds, but I scored it 118-110 for Macklin. He deserved to enter the Sergio showdown with Sturms' belt... I will say that seems to be his shining performance with no real close second. Blasting out Alcine was nice, but nothing extraordinary.

Macklin isn't a bum, he is a legit top 10 guy when he is at his best. That being said, it's questionable whether he would be a top ten guy, during the earlier part of Hopkins 160 pound reign. Daniel Geale definitely wouldn't be, neither would Darren Barker.

Sergio didn't make him quit, they stopped it in his corner, he looked like he didn't know where he was after the 2 KD's

That is just a case of "Brits will be Brits."

They always overrate fighters on their island. And they are super vocal. Add it together and you get "Brian Magee is James Toney!"

Not a bum, he and Martin Murray can only get motivated for the "big fights".

Honestly of all GGG's recent opponent I do think Macklin is one of the biggest bums, if Sergio had gone after him like he did Williams in the 2nd fight, Macklin wouldn't have made it to the 3rd round, Sergio nearly dropped him twice early, and figured he'd take his time and break him down slow.

Macklin not coming straight at Martinez was a factor too, imo. I think GGG would make Murray look much the same as Macklin if they fought.
At least Mack fought GGG, Murray still acts like he's an avoided fighter when he didn't want any part of GGG's WBA belt.

    Top 10?

I don't think so, and if that were true, it would mean the MW division is really depressed and lacking talent. I mean, currently the MW division is lacking talent, but not quite so badly to put Macklin in the top 10.

I am not a fan of Boxing Rec's points based ranking system, but their placing Macklin at #16 only seems to me to be 5-6 levels away from the truth. I'd place Macklin somewhere between 23-26 in the MW division.

I've never seen where he has earned this high regard, even before the Golovkin fight. In fact, when the GGG fight was announced I and probably everyone else knew for certain it was an easy Golovkin win.

Hes overrated. He gets credit for giving Martinez a tough fight but that doesn't really mean much.

If Sergio had of been 100% he would have stopped Murray, as would GGG with ease.
