Lewis thought he had no equal after beating Tyson and rated the newer heavyweights so poorly that he thought no one would come along for years to offer him any real challenge. Vitali proved more difficult an opponent than he expected and forced him to confront reality that there would still be fighters out there who could test him. The issue then was whether he was prepared to meet those challenges and, after much consideration, he decided he was not and walked away. He cared too much about his legacy to fight on and on like Holyfield, Holmes and Ali did and end up losing to fighters who wouldn't have troubled him in his prime resulting in damage to his reputation, and he reasoned that he had met Vitali on equal terms and he had taken everything Vitali had to give and still come out on top so he had nothing to prove. Many wouldn't agree with that assessment but then I'm not one of them - Vitali wasn't good enough to get the job done on the night and that's the bottom line.
I don't care if he was a popous ass or not, I've been watching boxing for over 40 years and I know who won that fight. You don't have to like the winner but you do have to know enough about boxing to recognize who the winner is. No champ owes the loser a rematch, especially if he retires. Grow up and welcome to life.
Perfect post. And it wasn't as if Vitali didn't know he only had 3-4 rounds to get the job done, he knew it and simply couldn't do it.

Absolute bull**** You've never met Lennox so how would you know. He's actually one of the nicect guys you'd ever want to meet. As for the fools saying Lennox was scared of a match with Vitali. It was Lennox that offered the title shot to Vitali at 10 days notice. Name me any other world champ that took on his #1 contender on a few days notice when he was only 80% fit? You wont find one
Actually what was in the works was Lennox Lewis -Ike Ibeabuchi match. Ike was to have one more fight then the title shot with Lennox. But we all know what happened with Ike. He was a fool to ever call that hooker she ruined his life. That Lewis-Ibeabuchi would have been a barnburner had it happened & knowing both guys it would have been a hard fight for me to watch. There was no one else for Lennox to get himself up for He'd beaten every man he ever faced. He got out at exactly the right time
Bull****!!! An 80% ready Lennox destroyed a 100% Vitali TKO 6 Just imagine what a 100% ready Lennox would do to him
Now youre changing your story its IF Ike was on steroids now ROFL You claimed earlier you KNEW Ike was on steroids. Now Vitali is a PROVEN steroids abuser he was caught during his Olympic days. Sorta screwed up didnt ya LOL
I not changing my argument, I'm just poking holes in yours. I'm saying that you went to his gym and you didn't see him shooting up doesn't mean he wasn't using, It's actually quite a ridiculous point you made. Would you expect Ike to detail his cycle to you? Or give you a tutorial on the right place to inject? Vitali was open about what happened, he inadvertently used a banned substance when a coach gave it to him prior to the 1996 Olympics to heal an injury. He has never failed a drug test in any professional fight. Now Lewis is very suspect, he put on 25 pounds of muscle in a few years in the pros. In a sport like boxing where there is such a huge emphasis on cardiovascular fitness surely it would be impossible to gain that much muscle mass without chemical assistance.
"Inadvertantly" Just STFU. Vitali was caught red handed and rightly kicked off the Olympic team. :deal
lol now you are just living in a fantasy world. How'd you figure to give Lennox 80% that's quite an arbitrary decision. He was coming off of the 2 best performances of his career so he was still very close to his prime. Lennox got ass whooped plain and simple, and by great luck managed to receive a victory. If Lenny was so confident why did he puss out and duck Vitali into retirement? It's because he knew he hit the lottery in the first fight and didn't want lose in a rematch. As the above poster said if Lennox had the balls to climb into the ring again with Vitali he would get knocked out.
Ok so now you're turning into a grammar nazi. Guess you gotta get your little victories in somehow....
