I think it's clear that Lewis took Vitali more lightly than he would have done had he known what we do now. Vitali at that stage was seen as a robotic plodder who would be found out against the best. In retrospect it was a terrific win for an old Lewis.
His broadcasting career also ended early even though HBO gift wrapped that colour commenating position, he was so horrible and driven by ego they could not see the back of him fast enough. Rumor has it that when the brass at HBO called Lewis in for a meeting the following was overheard. "Lennox: Regarding your position with HBO boxing-IT'S OVAH!!!!
Simple question. Most would say what Vits accomplished after Lewis would qualify it as a great win. Myself, i look at his quality of comp after that when judging. Some would claim Vittles was still green (something i dont buy for a second) so its not that great. Others will claim its not a good win at all because Lewis was down on the cards at the time of the so stoppage. Absurd, but whatever. Where do you rate the win and why? Poll coming.
lewis and the klits were slightly above average. nothing special. just big men when the majority were small.
Let me play devils advocate. Why not? Didnt Vits go on to an unbeaten streak the rest of his career? Wasn't Lewis old, and battle worn? Isn't Vits a menece h2h against most heavyweights in history? It has to be a great win if you answer yes to any of these. No?
Lewis was without a doubt the worst commentator HBO has ever had. It was a great day when they got rid of him. I remember the Dirrell-Stevens snooze fest where Lewis was praising Dirrell's running and even compared his performance to Muhammad Ali.
