According to Kathy Duva she couldn't compete with Haymon financially when negotiating with NBC. Haymon is getting 24 shows with most being on NBCSports and probably 4 on the main NBC network and he's putting up 20 million for those dates. Supposedly, Haymon wants to do away with HBO, Showtime, ppv's, etc and create a boxing channel of his own. I know a lot of this has been rumored and such lately but its interesting hearing from a promoter like Duva confirming a lot of whats been talked about.
haymon is a cancer to boxing...........................he needs to be eradicated from the sport............recently he is trying pull wilder out of the stiverne bout......................
Surely this is good for boxing to be on non PPV, non subscription TV. Bringing boxing back to the masses
haymon does not care about the fans he pays his fighters **** load of money to take on bums................
So will these be relatively unknown fighters or will he put relevant guys on there? Might we dream that big time boxing will some day get back on free tv?
I'm glad to hear this. I'm not a big Haymon fan at all. But when NBC announced it was going to start showing boxing, I didn't expect it to just be Kathy Duva showing the same four or five fringe guys over and over and over again. (Steve Cunningham wasn't on television this much when he was actually a champion.) If Haymon is actually paying nearly a million dollars of his own money to put on each show, "maybe" we'll get better matchups or at least more significant matches than NBC currently shows. Maybe even some title fights. That would be nice. This move also frees up Showtime. If Haymon's guys are all fighting on NBCSports, Showtime will have some open air dates to fill. Maybe Showtime can get back to televising fights from Europe, like they did when they used to showcase Hatton, Calzaghe, etc. There are a lot of exciting fights happening in Europe that aren't televised in the U.S.
only reason hes doing this is because... A. HBO does not want him. B. Espinoza is about to get the axe and haymon is prolly going down with him for giving the fans shiet fights and mayweather not being able to generate income for showtime.
I may be wrong, but I think Showtime was paying Haymon's fighters a shitload of money to fight bums. Usually the network pays money to the promoter to televise an event. Haymon was getting Showtime to fork over a lot of money and he was delivering crap matchups. If this situation with NBC is true, Haymon IS PAYING NBC - which reaches a far greater audience than HBO or Showtime does - to show his fighters. If Haymon is forking over the money, hopefully he'll make better matches. He wasn't paying the bill before. If he is paying, he might expect more in return.
I agree. I think this move is out of desperation. If Haymon is paying NBC millions to show his fighters, he's going "all in" ... because his back is against the wall. Promoters don't usually pay networks to show fights. It's usually the other way around.
I'd rather watch Danny Jacobs defend his "paper" middleweight title on NBC against Peter Quillan in Madison Square Garden than watch Thabiso Mchunu vs Garrett Wilson - which was Kathy Duva's last MAIN EVENT on NBC. (What a complete waste of valuable air time.) Being someone who grew up watching boxing on NBC, CBS and ABC, Duva's run as NBC's (even if it was just NBCSports) go-to boxing promoter has been a complete disappointment.
