It has been said the 2009 Tua vs Cameron fight set a PPV per capita world record. 88000 New Zealanders purchased the event, New Zealand has a population of around 4.4million so the buy rate was around 1 in every 50 NZers purchasing the event. The equivalent in the US would be over 6 million buys. New Zealand doesn't have the biggest history in the sport so its quite a feat really. We do love watching the big boys slug it out though. Thats probably why all of our better fighters are in the heavy weight classes.
I still remember it like it was yesterday. Went to the local pub with 10 or so mates, older brother and my old boy. The place was packed to the roof. $10 entry with a free drink (not really free, but, you know...). The place went mad! Good night of boxing for NZ. Its a shame both are essentially retired. We may still get another couple of slug fests out of Cameron if he beats Meehan. I think NZ will be able to surpass the PPV sales of that night in the future. Not for a while, but there is plenty of talent coming through. :good
Would be very surprised if that fight was actually PPV in NZ because it took place in the morning being at the other side of the globe in Germany. Plus many channels offering it for free anyway, like boxing was pre 90's and should be.
It was ppv but it was advertised mostly as a Joseph Parker step up fight. Leapai was kind of secondary attraction. Probably got a few views I suppose
