I can't understand why Jersey Joe Walcott isn't taking this thread over.
There has never been a referee botched fight like the second Ali-Liston fight.

Because being negligent with fighter's lives in your hands outweighs any meaningless crap that means nothing more than a potentially botched TKO result.

You do see the difference, right?

In terms of horrible negligence and incompetence leading to one fighter's injuries then I would nominate the embarrassingly amateur Frenchman who reffed Benn vs McClellan or Ruby Goldstein who allowed Emil Griffith to kill Benny Paret.

Beethavean Scottland was the fighter. Max Kellerman, doing commentary from ringside, was openly critical of Mercante Jr.'s actions. He repeatedly expressed very strong concerns for Scottland's well-being while calling the fight.

The referee from the Ottke v Reid fight. Actually telling Reid off for hitting Ottke.

Also Cortez in the Mayweather v Hatton fight.

I have no problem with a ref coaxing a fight out of two combatants, such as telling them to pick it up or you're here to fight. But interfering with something like a fighter down - as if you're a cornerman - well that is showing partiality towards a fighter. And a ref - if anything - should be demonstrating impartiality from the get go.

Tony Perez during Ali/Frazier 2. Thought he heard the bell to blunt an Ali rally and also allowed Ali to excessively hold Frazier behind the head the whole fight.

In another way the referee that worked Duran/Bizarro. Lou could've been killed.

That fight was my FIRST thought; why this shell of a great man was allowed to referee a fight is beyond me? My late bud and I saw it closed circuit (with Foster-Ahumada) in downtown Indy) Towards the end, Jerry looked over at Joe wanting the fight stopped but Joe simply motioned them to continue? :patsch

Danny Williams vs some Eastern European, cant remember his name.

Danny was down by 8 rounds by the 5th round, thats how bad it was.

And one round, they stopped with 1.5-2 minutes remanining.
