Moog from what ive heard Rickys always been stubborn regards nutrition and diet , maybe this is the time he now realises its a massive part of the game , i train with Big Brophy most weeks and the guy takes his nutrition as serious as his training getting constantly monitored in terms of weight and bodyfat all through his camps , have a look at his weigh in video from friday and youl see the condition he gets himself in is class

I had the pleasure of being down Billys gym recently for a wee session, and David was in great nick I must say. Seemed a nice guy too. I think he can go real far, at least European level. I see boxrec have him rated 12th in UK at SMW, well I would say there is a few above him I would fancy him beating now. Good to see him dismantle a guy with a winning record at weekend, the class sparring at Gallaghers will have helped too. I tell you I would fancy his chances against Frank Buglioni. Paul Smith is now at world level, so will chuck British soon, Callum Smith is going down other routes, Fielding is injured, I think his team should target a British eliminator v likes of Blackledge or Buglioni as I would strongly fancy David to beat either. Big things have been said about Steve Collins training Buglioni, well Ryan Rhodes was a good fighter and we seen when Woodhouse fought Limond that Peter Harrison had a gameplan far better than Rhodes gameplan, Billy would do same with Collins. :good

hi billy, listen im not saying your at fault for ricky not listening during fights or during training. i also think what you did when you got ricky to winning 2 world titles and having 10 world title fights together.
what im saying is that during the beltran fight by leaving ricky to carry on fighting for another 10 rounds with a busted jaw you might have mentally finished rickys career.
i know you couldnt tell how serious it was but ever since that fight it has been obvious that he doesnt want to get feel the pain he felt that night. you are not the only one who has let fighters carry on and it has caused a fighter never to be the same. joe gallagher did it with john murray.
i would like to ask you that if you had another fighter boxing and came back to the corner with a busted jaw telling you he was in agony. would you do the same thing again or with hindsight and what we have seen it has done to ricky would you be mor ecautious and think about pulling your fighter so he can live to fight another day?
i really believe that if ricky had been pulled earlier then he could have passed it off as a freak shot ie like getting caught a peach and being ko'd. but letting him carry on with the fight he has been mentally beaten and i doubt he will ever be the same again.
it wouldnt be an admission of any guilt if you were to say if it happened again i would do things different but it would show that you had learnt from the past.

the difference with being Ricky was always in that fight with Beltran and yes we never knew how bad the injury was.
But what I will say is in the gym after the injury Ricky was looking great in sparring with Mitchell,Ward,Campbell and Selby so there's absolutely no excuses, I never done anything differently from his previous 23 fights for myself, although Ricky and I paid for a strength and conditioning trainer which I personally thought he simply never needed.

I understand your point, but Ricky is a fighting man so realistically its Should not leave scarring, I have known normal guys who have had jaws broken and getting attacked my tooled up gangs and still fought back, and its never mentally scared them since. Look at Rugby League player Sam Burgess got his jaw broke at start of a cup final at weekend, carried on played full match and got Man of Match award. Also I said at time if Ricky is struggling mentally he should have went to see a sports psychologist for help. Billy doe right keeping him in fight, what Ricky should have done is go gun ho afterwards and try and knock Beltran out

i understand that ricky was in the fight but he has never looked the same in the ring again. maybe when sparring he had on a big headgaurd and would have been wearing bigger gloves.
so are you saying that faced with the same situation you would still leave the fighter and just hope he reacts better after the fight than ricky has?
i also agree on the strength and conditioning front because he was always in terrific shape.

but everybodys mindset is different, the people you have known might have been hit once cleanly or beaten up for a minute. the rugby player might have had his jaw broken but is it as bad and i doubt he was being constantly hit on it for 30 minutes after it happened.
billy told us that rickys jaw was broken in the second and no matter who you are it would be agony to be constantly hit on that injury over 30 more minutes.
i agree that a sports psycologist would be a good shout but it might be too late.
you might think billy did right and on that night he probably did but with the wonderful pleasure of hindsight we can see that night ruined his career just as joe gallagher did when he let john murray get badly beaten by rios for rounds after teh whole world knew he wasnt going to beat rios. that is why i asked billy if it happened to him in the future would he still be as gung ho with his fighter knowing it could finish them off

if the same senario happened again I'd do the same thing, do remember at no point did Ricky indicate he wanted out because he knew he was the better of the two fighters, I firmly believe Ricky would have won handsomely had the injury not occurred, watch Crawfords speed and movement it will be far to much for Ray imo

Yeah Crawford will beat Beltran with ease, interestingly Rick said Zlaticanin hurt him ore than Crawford, makes me even more surprised why in last few rounds he never through it all at Crawford to try and get a stoppage win (unlikely he would have, but it was worth the try late on)

I seen Ricky saying that but I'm not sure he was meaning in the sense that Zlaticanin hurt him I think he was meaning more the loss hurt more than the Crawford loss because Crawford is a class fighter but guys on Zlaticanins level Ricky should've been beating him.

I see that but I heard he also said in an interview he hit harder, with those big wild swipes I am not surprised, though sent with a telegraph

The reason Ricky got caught with that shot he didn't come in using his jab the first thing he tried to do was throw a silly 6 punch combnation leaving himself wide open, Ricky needs to go back to using his jab keep his opponents at length for a few rounds using jabs before bringing other punches behind it.

To me Burns has always boxed at his best off using his jab and outworking the opponent.
His style has been changed obviously not for the better setting his feet and as moog says and I totally agree with his work has become telegraphed.

He used to be excellent at upsetting an opponents rhythm via his workrate from distance now he looks a fighter that is fighting without a game plan that suits his style and it is showing big time.

i stand by what i said and think burns was not world class , fringe level maybe , billy do you think you can get another fighter to world honours ?

i suppose if you only read the title it would look that way. read my opening post and some of my replies. valid question and billy has answered it with his view.
ienjoyed ricky under billy and im sure anyone could see that he took a kid from being beat from johannson to being 2 weight champion but it doesnt hide the fact that by not pulling out ricky against beltran he may have finished his career.
i have also stated that he isnt the only coach who is too brave for his fighters health and we have seen joe gallagher ruin john murrays career by letting him take a savage beating by brandon rios
brave coach = ruined fighters. some of these coaches should be made to realise the damage they can do to someone by letting them take needless punishment. its a long life to live when you retire and it isnt much to ask that a coach looks further than there own ego at times. plenty of coaches like this not just the 2 i mentioned.
