i only watched on tv but i remember that on more than 1 occasion ricky shaking his head at you and looking in total distress. he was probably in shock from the pain and as a professional coach im sure you would know about shock? you must have to do a first aid course?? also what fighters will ask to be pulled out? not many and that is where their coach is supposed to look after their well being. i remember watching denton vasell against gavin and he was telling the doctor he was ok but anyone could see he was in pain and rightly they pulled him out. i can only hope that the parents or wives of fighters under your guidance do not read this because im sure they will be worrying about the lasting damage your braveness and ego might end up doing to that person.
i have no doubt that you could easily take another fighter to world level and i hope you do. i would just like you to learn from past incidents and think that in the future you would maybe put the fighters health first. is david brophy back out soon and have you any talent you think might reach world honors?
I have to say some of the cajoling Billy did to keep Ricky going made uncomfortable viewing. Ricky was losing by a mile (regardless of what the judges said) and he was in agony. Keeping him going was blood and guts we really didn't need. A rematch with Beltran would have been better than fighting Crawford surely. As for Murray, we know him and Gallagher was a last minute marriage of convenience for the Rios fight. They can't stick each other and I'm sure Joe was happy to see John battered. Otherwise he'd have saved him for another day. Waiting to see if Rios gassed, yeah right!
One thing is for sure, the new trainer could not lace Billy Nelson's gloves given the previous 2 pathetic performances since Billy was axed.
Stick Billy gets on this is a disgrace, anyone who has boxed or even trained in a boxing gym would never slate Billy..
Billy has done a great deal for Ricky Burns and put Scottish boxing back on the map. He deserves nothing but credit as far as boxing is concerned. I don't know the guy personally so I can't comment on him but as far most who post on this forum they don't have a clue how hard boxing and coaching is. After 5 years and 20 amateurs all the hard work you can just suddenly find your heart isn't in it the way it used to be so for a team like Billy and Ricky to go as farthey did you can have nothing but respect for that. Is there boxer/trainer patnerships that have gone further? Yes bit 99% don't and many who do get further take illegal PEDs.
Eddie wanted to make the Beltran rematch but Top Rank were pushing the Crawford fight being Ricky's mandatory even though Beltran is promoted by TR aswell. I don't think any trainer wants to see his fighter "battered" no one knew the extent of that injury I'm not even sure Ricky himself would have known yes he said his jaw was ****ed but that could have been a muscle spasm or anything so to get through how he did was a credit to Ricky and Billy, Everyone just looks too much for an excuse to have a go at Billy on here.
Didn't see this before making my post but we're thinking along the same lines. I have had 12 fights over 4 years finding it hard to motivate myself the way I used to. When I look at what Billy and Ricky have done I can only respect that. The more you achieve in boxing the more respect for people in the game you have generally speaking. The fact Billy still has time for people on here says all you need to knoe about him. Proper down to Earth bloke. Billy took Burns from a struggling domestic level fighter to a two weight world champion. Ricky has since dumped him as a trainer and hasn't looked any better.
Look as far as I am concerned Ricky looked good every time under Billy. Yes he came up short against Beltran and Crawford but he still gave both problems and these are top class Americans. Nobody was slagging Gamboa's trainer off after Gamboa got KO'd by Crawford.
No one was even slagging Gamboa off I seen a comment somewhere saying "Gamboa would destroy Burns" so even then attention switched to giving Ricky abuse.
Yeah Gamboa would destroy Burns now, not the Burns of 18 months ago. I thought Burns gave Crawford a tough fight eon about 4 rounds came on strong at the end. Look how much he's declined since.
Crawford didn't even get out of first gear. Gamboa would have destroyed Ricky. Seriously, take the tartan tinted glasses off.
Crawford won the fight and he's a fighter who will go on to big things but when you seen how he handled Gamboa Ricky done well to get through the fight, Gamboa would be a tough fight for Ricky these days but the Ricky who fought Mitchell and Katsidis would have too much for him IMO.
**** me Solaris has your giro not arrived today you seem well pissed off pal. Come on up to Scotland and we'll educated you my old chum lol. Ricky at his best would have beat the Gsmboa who turned up against Crawford
