I've just reviewed his 2 fights with Taylor: in the first one, he does get hit quite a lot but shows his heart to comeback and stun the champion. In the second one, he looked stuck into first gear and seemed to push his punches. The rounds were awfully close, and i reckon it could have gone either way. After these 2 fights, he never produced again the same boxing quality. Was the first fight too brutal ? Both guys soaked up a lot of punishment that night, and were never the same afterwards.
I have think about the same question many times and my opinion has changed a few times. Nowdays I don´t see either of them that good to begin with. Pavlik was always about size and take a punch to give one-type of a fighter. Taylor wasn´t doing much after Hopkins, fighting smaller guys. When he eventually met Froch and Abraham he went down like Pavlik vs Taylor 1. Pavlik on the other hand was taking punishment every time he went to the ring. It was obvious Pavlik would not make a long boxing career.
No he was always average tbh. That tends to happen quite a lot down at the fragmented dwarf weight classes. With more weight classes than actual short people with millions of 'World champions' in each weight class on top of that so you're always now and again gonna get an awful fighter like Pavlick pick up a belt. especially so when we see how often the dwarf fighters throw belts in the bin, out and out duck, never unify, move up weights etc... It's a farce. There should be no more than about 8 weight classes. Heavyweight Cruiserweight Light heavyweight and then just merge all the rest of the dwarf divisions together and use those to make up the other five 'new' weight classes.
Well, i believe having more weight classes makes things less dangerous as far as boiling down is concerned. But the true disgrace is the number of sanctionning organisations. And i don't believe Pavlik was average; he did to Taylor and Miranda what none had done before, in style. Had he met Martinez that night instead of Taylor, he would have kod him too. He was just too brave for his own sake.
Pavlik was a good fighter but had a lot of demons his worst mistake was staying in Youngstown he should have moved out the and got away from bad influences there. While he was active he was great to watch and is missed to this day.
pavlik was underrated on his way up. he knocked out mckart, zuniga, zertuche miranda and taylor...none of whom had been stopped. not a bad run at all considering the route some take to "titles." pavlik was then overrated after the taylor fights. he put asses in seats and was very easy to hype due to fan pleasing style and the fact that he's white. then he ran into hopkins. pavlik was also always a drunk. this whole "it started after winning the title" is a joke. it all just finally caught up to him and progressively got worse. he fought martinez two weeks after getting out of rehab which is crazy that he couldn't even hold it together for one training camp. the guy was a solid fighter and was the best mw in the world for a brief moment. more than most can say but he definitely pissed away a lot of what should have been good years. I'm sure we'll see him again in the ring after the money is gone. and I'm probably the guy's biggest fan still on the board.
Pavlik lost his will fighting to the sauce like many other great Americans. If only he put the jack down. :[
nah it was more than that. heard plenty of stories from people around the area who saw him in bars with his nose leaking like a sieve. the dude has legit substance abuse issues.
Well he still had good performances after. Destroying Rubio in 7 being one of them. Clearly trying to be an elite athlete while having a drinking problem isnt ever going to be ideal.
I agree. He couldn't handle losing his sense of invincibility, and it also didn't help getting totally and utterly schooled by Bernard.
yeah there was/is. there were a lot of stories that kinda leaked out there when he was still fighting but were quickly covered up. cops being called to the house, pavlik putting his hand through a window and needing a lot of stitches, etc. there used to be a few posters on here from his area.
