Who was the biggest hype job in boxing history that wasn't nearly as good as made out to be? I'm going to go with Tyson.
Jack Munro,Harry Kid Mathews,Roland Lastarza,Chuck Davey, Donny Lalonde,Adrian Broner,Darrin Van Horn to start.
There was a man who was meant to be Leonard and Hearns rolled into one. Mark Breland was good, but...
Howard Davis Jr is a good example. He won the Val Barker trophy after winning the gold in 1976 beating out Ray Leonard. Had a ton of hype entering the pros but never won a title. Tyson was definately a massive hypejob. This is not to say he wasn't a great boxer for a period of time but the media, fans and boxing establishment had invested so much into the myth of Tyson that he was percieved as some sort of invincible dreadnought. Of course this was not the truth and Buster Douglas, emboldened by the death of his mother, shattered the myth into a thousand pieces.
Michael Grant, Shannon Briggs, Jeff Lacy, Andre Berto, Billy Fox, Duane bobick, Adrien Broner, Kelly Pavlik
Marciano, Dempsey and Tunney were not hypejobs. They were great fighters within their eras. However they are severally overrated today when poeple say that they would be HW champions now.
I remember Jeremy Williams was getting mediocre hype around '93 or so. If that dude had Ray Mercer's chin...
Hate to say this but:Greg Page, Michael Dokes, Gerry Cooney, Alex Ramos, Vanilla Ice, and Donald Curry.
most of wlads opposition the type who gas out after 4 rounds, are somehow hyped into being word class athletes. unbelievable lies.
He's built up as an all time great and never beat a great fighter, I was being a bit harsh. None the less I don't like how he's hyped as a destroyer when there's few great heavyweights I imagine him beating.
I gotta agree. Nobody denies that Tyson was a great fighter, but he gets a ridiculous level of worshipping
