Between Joe Louis and Riddick Bowe, who do you think is the bigger H2H threat. I think that Bowe will get more supporters than you'd expect because of his physical advantages, but I'll say Louis because I can picture him beating more ATG heavyweights than Bowe.
It's like this; Bowe was right, right up there for maybe three nights. Louis was right, right up there for twenty contests, the most celebrated title run in history, four years and it would have been for longer if the war hadn't intervened. So yes, it probably is close if you allow a literal best for best (though I would favour Louis). Now think of it this way - lay out the twenty best heavies you can muster from history over a six year period in real time and tell me Bowe would even hold a candle to Louis's haul; tell me it would even be competitive. It wouldn't. And if you made them settle a different score with a dust up at the end of six years, the broken-down Bowe probably wouldn't last six rounds with the faded bomber. Louis is a byword for greatness. Bowe is a byword for nearly. Louis.
the only thing that Bowe had over Louis was size and he was a big target who got hit too much. Louis brought all the tools, the weapons and the know how and was also always conditioned.
Who did Louis beat? his best h2h opponents near his in or prime were Max Baer whom came in injured and Arnold Cream whom convincingly beat him in their 1st fight but got robbed by the judges. ___________ Bowe was too much for Holyfield. The Pinklon Thomas that Bowe stopped without putting down was a far superior fighter to Max Schmelling both h2h & p4p. Andrezj Golota was better than Carnera. Lionel Butler was at least on Galento's level. Bert Cooper too. All things considered, Louis' opposition was not even more telling than Bowe's. And despite Bowe's nonexistent defense, and as much as shaky as his chin was, he was more convincing against his opposition than Louis was against his own.
I figure Bowe goes undefeated against all the 80s Heavies except for Tyson. I feel Louis takes a loss there. Apples vs Oranges. Whos gonna beat Bowe? maybe Tyson, Foreman, Ali. Same with Joe. I think Bowe should be rated a little higher H2H for size thats just a bias though, the physical strength of Louis was incredible. both top 5 H2H imo.
Ok I'll back up Frank. In his prime we saw Louis almost lose to a variety of styles- boxer punchers like Schmeling, swarmers like Godoy, pure movers of the aggressive type in Conn. Bowe we only saw struggle with atg holyfield at the peak of his powers (and you can argue he won all 3 or would have if fan man had worse aim). Do by the literal definition of h2h we can say that we saw more types come close to beating Louis than Bowe therefore Bowe is the greater h2h force.
With Bowe's jab, power, chin, heart, and corner he could have beat anyone. He had his boxing lessons as a pro, even a shot Bowe could grind out a win in the trenches. Underrated Power, jab and the inside game is gonna starch or UD all but a few. He could be outjabbed and had focus lapses, Joe had stylistic flaws as well. But just too big and talented for most though. Difficult to definitively beat.
Perhaps Bowe only struggled with one type of fighter, because he only fought one really good fighter. You have to ask who his second best opponent was.
Most people don't include resume in h2h. It's how you looked in your fights rather than who you fought.
Bowe would of knocked the **** out of Conn, Walcott, Schmelling one sided in the first go, along with everybody else Louis fought. Bowe matches up better to Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis , Vitali, Wlad, Holmes better than Louis does so imo Bowe is the bigger H2H threat. This is provided its the near technically perfect Bowe of the first Holyfield fight is put forward mind.
