    A Retrospective
Santos Saúl Álvarez Barragan 07/18/90 is a 5'8 Junior Middleweight with a 44-1 31 KO's. Born in Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco, Guadalajara, Mexico. The youngest of 8 children, 7 boys, all of them are boxers, but Canelo is the only one worth anything of the bunch, Rigoberto's okay, but not that great, he got his ass beaten silly by Rubio. I have mixed feelings on Canelo, when he first showed up I thought he was another overrated hype job, being marketed to the fans because of the novelty factor of his look, its not everyday you see a Mexican who looks like an Irish kid. I remained a cynic all throughout him defeating a shot Baldomir, beating Ricky Hatton's crappy brother, a partially retired Martinez/Margarito victim Cintron, the the very poor and early stoppage of Gomez, and the beatdown of a sad shell of Shane Mosley.

The Josesito victory was impressive, but who cares he was too small for Canelo, but when Canelo first impressed me was when he took the fight against Trout, very hard to look good against and coming off of his schooling of Cotto, but he took the fight like a man, he didn't look great and the fight was close, even though I scored it for Trout, a Canelo win wasn't all that egregious, but then I winced when he took the match with Floyd, I knew that Floyd realized from his struggles with Austin, he had limitations that could easily be exploited and that he would dominate Canelo. But after the loss instead of crawling into a hole and let his first stumble get to him psychologically, he learned from his mistakes and it has made him a better boxer, willing to take on all comers.

Because of his destruction of Angulo (who granted was badly drained) and Yes win (barely) over the much feared scary boogieman Lara who ran in terror of Canelo's savage body attack, he has earned my respect and I have become a Canelo fan, no longer do I see a coddled spoiled new Golden Boy of Oscar's making. Now I see him as his own man and like a true Mexican Warrior willing to fight anyone, a quality several top talents unfortunately don't possess. So finally Viva Canelo Future Mexican Legend and P4P Star, just please don't fight Triple G its not worth it.:ggg:ggg:ggg:ggg

I don't think Canelo has really developed much actually over the past few years. To me, the Gomez fight really showed his limitations against an actual solid boxer-type for the first time and since he's not shown me anything to indicate that he's learned how to deal with one. He had enough on just talent to beat out Gomez(on a terrible stoppage), Trout and Lara(on razor-thin questionable decisions), and got utterly schooled by Floyd as you would expect. Basically, he'll look really good against opponents that he has an edge in technique on(most brawlers and punchers) and bad against real boxer types. He doesn't know how to lead off well or cut off the ring well against them. He does however, deserve a lot of credit as you say for stepping up from his early coddled days and taking on some serious challenges in recent years.

Amazing how far hes come at his age.

To put in perspective GGG hadnt even gone pro by the time he was Alvarez age now.

    Alvarez is still improving.

For me Saul Alvarez (birthname Saul McAlvey), doesn't impress me as much as he did earlier in his career.
He's one talented Irish lad, but I think he stalled in his development. Maybe he just needs another trainer.
