In accordance with the current structuring of weight classes, Marciano would not be a heavyweight. When he was in tip top shape at low bf% he weighed about 180-185lbs, in the Louis fight of example he weighed 180lbs. That is the size of a modern average/small LHW before they cut water weight to make the LHW limit.
I'm actually a Wilder fan. He's not carrying extra flab like so many HW's. His power appears to be scary. The punch he flattened Liakhovich with was scary. Just wish he took harder fights. Though I understand he's a valuable commodity whose management wishes to make money with. A loss anymore today in the HW's can mean back to crappy purses.
The simple fact is Marciano was the HW champion. However you may wish to challenge that fact doesn't change it in the least. Your reasoning is much like the poster Farmboxer.
undisputed, undefeated hw, hof beating champ at that. and atg. hell, why is daytime widdler even being mentioned alongside the rock.
its crazy. I have nothing against free speech and open forums and debating threads, but stupid discussions, that's something worth speaking up about.
Rocky trimmed down from his walking around weight of a littel over 200. His self described & obvious peak weight was ~ 187. I checked Tale of the Tape vs. Louis, he was 184 there, not 180, & all agree he was not in his stylistic & skill based prime. http://www.bobpaceboxing.com/BW_Marciano_Louis_TT.html You can argue that the physical difference would be fidfficult to overcome, though i do not know if Rocky would be effective as a LHW, & it is important to be precise in terms of numbers. The fight would not be sanctioned today unless Rocky moved up to HW. He could easily, the question is if he would lose a much work rate & endurance. he would have a bit more power & mayeb chin. Wilder has not fought anyone of note yet, this is extreme for someone with 30 some fights & undefeated.
Wilder reminds me Michael Grant. He looks a million dollars padding his record with journeymen but as soon as he faces legitimate competition I think it is highly likely that he will be exposed in the same way. The top fighters can absorb shots and fight back and until he steps up to that level and performs then he is merely a contender and should not be mentioned in the same breath as the tried and tested champions of the past.
Yes the HW champion in an era when anybody over 175lbs was considered a heavyweight. It wasn't like he was fighting modern sized HWs on a regular basis either, his opponents' median weight was 193lbs. If you truly believe a slow, plodding average sized LHW who wasn't hard to hit is going to beat a modern HW who is much faster/athletic, with advantages in 16 inches of reach, 9 inches of height, 45-50lbs of lean mass and can hit like a truck then I have a bridge to sell you.
You may be the only Wilder fan on the forum. Sorry to break it to you but Wilder is going to get KO'd in his next fight against Stiverne and would lose to anybody in the top 10. Within 3 years he will be relegated to journeyman/bum status.
Then consider that you might be somewhat premature picking him over an all time great, even a small one. Size matters, but it is not the only thing that matters.
Marciano typically weighed about 185lbs when he was fighting a technician such as Charles, and 190lbs when he was fighting a bigger slower opponent. There have always been light heavyweights who sweated down form this sort of weight, to make the lhw limit, so you have to ask the question why Marciano never tried it? He was employing a punishing training regime, of a type that no modern fighter would employ, to get his weight down and improve his endurance. I suspect that it simply would not have been practical to combine this type of regime, with a punishing dehydration regime.
I pretty much think the same thing about Wilder that he will be exposed by the first real fighter he goes up against which will probably be Stiverne. But for you to lavishly praise his physical attributes and say he defeats an ATG FIGHTER, and then to denigrate Wilder in the next sentence is pretty funny to me. I hope he could win a title as it would be good to see HW title fights in the USA again. But I ain't holding my breath. You seem to focus on the physical in these posts. While those advantages obviously play a part in a boxing match, being able to exhibit skills on offensive and defense, to attack or protect yourself seem to me more a part of a successful boxer. Marciano may not have been a great boxer. But he was a great fighter. Those that seem to follow that one weird blog love to focus only on the physical. You can't measure a fighters heart or grit like you do his height or reach.
too soon to tell how good Wilder is, great record and a couple of decent wins, the looks like he can punch except for the Malik Scott phantom punch but once we see him in there with live competition we can tell what his strengths and weaknesses are. Lets see how he does against the 1st contender he fights=Tyson Fury-Stiverne-Haye-Jennings and then we can make a judgement on how he would fare with an ATG
