What is the general consensus on Jack Dempsey in 1926-27?

And in my childhood, Christopher Columbus was seen as discovering the New World and opening gateways to an international community, his actions so just and fine that there is still an official holiday celebrating them in the US.

Funny how perspective changes things a bit.

I agree. It was not a great performance by Dempsey, yet he still knocked him out.
There's no "spin" in that statement. Just fact.

Many of the same people laud Dempsey's win over Willard as the most earth shattering victory ever achieved in the heavyweight ranks… forgetting to mention that Willard was 37 years old and had fought 10 rounds in the previous 4 years.

They were both excellent victories. I would contend that Dempsey of the Tunney fight was far less rusty than Willard of the Dempsey fight… and that Dempsey had far more to work with in the first place.

    I don't understand this reasoning.
He was either diminished or he wasn't, the cause is irrelevant.
No one's asking for sympathy for Dempsey.
Seems like very emotion-driven and moralistic reasonings going on here.

Terrible in '26 and ok in '27. I would compare him to post comeback Ray Robinson.

So Klompton you egomaniac, call ME a lying pissant from out of nowhere saying I lie claiming to be in my eighties ? You vile person, to accuse me of fibbing about my age... I posted before your highness, that I will wager any amount of money that I am in my eighties and the proceeds to go to charity but you coward have declined my offer and take potshots on me...This site bans people for much less infractions than accusing a senior citizen of lying about my advanced age...Shame on you and what about the wager
    you cur...?
P.S. I have tried hard to be civil with you, never attacking you personally to no avail as
you with your mighty holier than thou ego has no shame...

    (burt?)

I think it was an excellent victory.

    I see you agree. ;)

I think equally rusty, but Willard was fat and older too. (although to be fair, he peaked at 33)

    Very true.

That is very relevant point but Liston also fought just 6 rounds in the previous 3 years before fighting Ali.

Are you insane/ What are you talking about/ My work? I was referring to Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters of LSD fame who were always "tripping". I never referred to the fact he was my work. How could I call you. I don't even know you. You sir, are a conspiracy nut.:hi:

That's your take. I will stick to the existing record.

Then he should have remained active. He had no excuse not to. That is a weakness of his.

I would argue that at 31 and 70 or so (recorded) fights into his career, he had seen his best. He could have remained a factor but probably would have started picking up losses. Dempsey also could have remained a force but the division had caught up to his act and folks like Tunney had learned largely to defuse that sloppy, attacking style. He still had enormous power and could have KO'd anyone but more and more, he would meet the matadors who could beat him.

You always seem to be able to back up your opinions with hard facts... so let's hear what evidence you have, that suggests Burt isn't who he claims to be.
