The ultimate Detroit showdown, James "Lights out" Toney vs Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns how does this one play out at both middleweight and Light Heavyweight?
As much as I love Hearns... At middle, (in shape) would be a tough nut to crack. Solid chin, underrated skills. I can,t see Hearns getting the KO here... You could make a case that he,d get him the way he got Black Gold out early, but ... Toney doesn,t get stopped. Fight goes on long, I could see Toney grinding him down to a lt.rd. stoppage...It,s a great fight though while it lasts and Hearns has his moments...
While I tend to agree with you, I do wonder how it may have gone should Tommy's bullwhip left jab be on the mark. I also lean to Toney, make no mistake....but if he got James to follow round after round, into that jab...and used that nasty left hook to the body every so often....The Motor City Cobra may just have surprised us. Of course, a desperate Toney tended to get physical and gamble...and Hearns had some problems with physical, gritty types who rolled the dice.
160 or 175, doesn't matter, Hearns wins the battle of Detroit, at either weight by comfortable 15 round decision, i assume this is scheduled for 15?.... Im not a fan of either guy but i think Hearns was more refined, and reliable of the 2, it's been over 20 years, but i still can't get over an unknown Dave Tiberi kicking Toneys ass, only to get robbed... Hearns always showed up and in shape ready to give everything he had, can't say the same for Toney....
If we match up prime, properly trained versions then I am picking toney. In real life I can see hearns winning at least 1 of a series
James toney would win this matchup, its a nightmare match for hearns at a more natural weight class for toney.
Big Hearns fan here...but I lean towards Toney in this. Hearns jab and size would give Toney problems, but Toney's toughness, and ability to roll right hands give him an edge..IMO
