Why was Foreman vs. Frazier 1 considered Fight of the Year?

Considering that fight didn't last more than 2 rounds and was pretty much a wipe out, why was this considered by Ring Magazine as FOTY? It was more of a shock of the year if anything. Were there really no other great fights that year that could have been considered?

 

You have to put that fight in its proper context: 1973

After FOTC, Frazier was assumed to be the ultimate HW top dog, poised for a long and uneventful reign as lineal champion after disposing of Ali.

Foreman was a young up and coming underdog, but he was undefeated yet, and so was Frazier; thus it was going to be the definitive clash between the two best HW to decide which one was the chosen one. Sure it was not ROTJ o FOTC but there was a lot of hype surrounding the fight.

And then you have the fight itself. Foreman did something never seen before: he demolished Frazier in spectacular fashion dropping him not just oince or twice, but 6th times!! And Frazier just didn't give up .... never before a reigning HW champion had been beaten and humilliated so brutally and conclusively and tried so hard to stay in the game... both fighters played their roles well: Foreman the hungry conqueror and Frazier the vanquished but proud defeated.

Those were just two rounds of an one sided fight, but it was full of drama, so it was worth to be considered Fight oif the Year. Down goes Frazier!!! Down goes Frazier!!!

 

There was no reason to call Foreman -Frazier the fight of the year of 1973...that homor should have gone to Taylor-Anaya....one of the most exciting battles of all time, never mind 1973 alone.

 

Because The Ring had its head up heavyweight asses for a lot of years and thought the sport began and ended with that division.

Just in the 70's they had Foreman-Frazier I,Ali- Foreman,Young-Foreman, Spinks-Ali I as fights of the year. Not only shouldnt any of those be fights of the year but i doubt they would even make the top ten fights in the year they got the award.

BTW they(Ring) considered the Anaya-Taylor the best fight in their division history but still they consider Foreman-Frazier I the FOTY in 73, its all a joke.

 

Heavyweights always get a disproportionate amount of the attention, glory and money in boxing, especially when there's a glamorous champion.

The 70s heavies won the FOTY almost every year:

1971: Ali-Frazier I
1973: Foreman-Frazier I
1974: Ali-Foreman
1975: Ali-Frazier III
1976: Foreman-Lyle
1977: Foreman-Young
1978: Ali-Spinks II

Interestingly, the trend has ended since the heavyweight division has been taken over by non-Americans.

 

Frazier put up no resistance at all. Thoroughly beaten and outclassed. Doesn't even deserve a mention in this fight. Got up only to go down again and again. Ref should have put a stop to the inevitable

 

Ali - Norton II should have been 1973 heavyweight fight of the year.

Norton - Young should have been 1977

The **** does that fight have to do with Frazier being demolished? Was Frazier demolished at the Liston/Patterson fight? Was he hit by a car, or just figuratively smashed on goddamn white russians while sitting ringside?
