I’m trying to figure out why many fans think Hopkins will win. And then it hit me. I think some of pro Hopkins support has to due with hope.

You see Kovalev is just the first of a wave of very talented Russians about to dominate the light heavyweight division. This fight will likely see Kovalev crowned as the new king. After Hopkins USA prospects are a little thin at light heavy. This could explain why Hopkins has so many picking him to win.

Russian light heavies on the way up are at an all time high. Soon the light heavyweight division will resemble the heavyweight division. The good news is the fighters on the way up are very fan friendly. Who are they?

I think Beterbiev ( New pro ) will clean Kovalev’s clock if they meet in the pro’s. In fact he already did in the amateurs. Mekhonstev and Govzdyk are very talented as well. You’d have to follow the amateur game to be familiar with them. But there’s no doubt they are grade A prospects with an eye on the prize. Give it two more years and we’ll have a bunch of guys willing to fight each other.

It won't be Roy Jones cherry picking his opponents.

I think Hopkins will win. It could go either way, but I think Hopkins saw a few flaws in Kovalev's style and that's why he chose to fight him.

Such as? Hopkins isn't a power puncher, and isn't a high volume puncher.

At his age I think Hopkins can't take a good body shot. Kovalev is murder to the body.

Kovalev is no Pavlik and that fight took place many years ago.

The only path for legal victory is if Kovalev gasses our in the late rounds, or gets cut.

The more I think about it, the more I think Hopkins will win. I think Hopkins will bust up Kovalev (probably with a headbutt or an elbow) early and take Kovalev completely out of his game plan. Hopkins is going to take Kovalev to places he never dreamed of and I don't think Kovalev is going to be able to handle it that well. I see Hopkins getting a UD or stopping Kovalev late on a tko. Incidentally, I find Kovalev more likeable than Hopkins and wouldn't mind it a bit if Kovalev ko'd Hopkins, I just don't see it happening.

NO Im american but Im rooting for kovalev who gives a **** what country a fighter is from.here's why people think hopkins can win
its because he has experience and a proven track record against guys like kovalev.kovalev is kind of unproven he has never boxed past 8 rounds his chin is suspect and he is unstable.and what about kovalev's mental toughness???can he handle hopkins tricks without losing his mind from frustration???this saturday we will know the answer to those questions.

I don't know what it is but I'm assuming he see's some sort of glaring weakness to just make this fight at the drop of a hat like he did.

The source is you could have made this exact thread before the Trinidad and Pavlik fights. He was an underdog both times and both times he won.

I expect Kovalev to win, but won't be at all surprised if Hopkins frustrates Kovalev to a wide UD.

Fighters can attract fans based on their worldviews and behavior outside the ring. Hopkins is an x convict, a noted racist, and sometimes dirty fighter in a boxing ring.

I think some are severely underestimating Kovalev’s amateur experience. He won something like 195 fights, and has seen every style in the pro’s, the gym, and the amateur game.

Hopkins never fought a puncher on Kovalev’s level. While you are correct Kovalev has never been past 8 rounds, we are talking about an in shape light heavyweight in his prime. Going 12 vs. an older guy who’s not very active and will be pacing himself should not be an issue.

Only those were a dragged up middleweight and a light middleweight and also 6 and 13(!!!) years ago. Pretty damn different as a career LHW at the age of 49.

Please Tito was a blown up welterweight, who sometimes used 2" of hard tape under his gloves to increase his power. Hopkins was much bigger, in his prime, and could take away a fighter who relied heavily on one punch

Pavlik was only a puncher without a focused mind. He lacked Kovalev's defense, and am experience. Besides, these fight took place many years ago. Hopkins is 49

Many of those who think he'll win think he'll do it illegally

And a lot of people have been proven wrong so many times they wont write Hopkins off completely ever again

This is maybe his most dangerous fight in his career, but still, you just can't write the guy out of it completely

Interesting stuff about the up and coming Russians. It's long about time we had a shake up in boxing with fighters keen to prove themselves vs the best. If these up and coming new breed of Russians provide that, then it's a welcome and much needed shift, even if they have the personalities of stiff robots

No, it's because Hopkins usually finds a way to win, legal or illegal.

He's as cunning and crafty as they come, and he's very physically fit and probably on designer PEDs that keep him from declining due to age.

I would never place a money bet against B-Hop, same as I would never bet against the Devil. :thedevil1

How many times has Hopkins defied the odds? How many times have we heard this before the Tarver, Cloud, Trinidad, Pavlik etc fights
