Nicely put together. Although, Dempsey's reputation for being a "brawler", frequently belies his knowledge of the game (as do the two losses to futuristic Ring Scientist Tunney).

Dempsey's skills are often overlooked, in favour of the lasting image of ferocity he painted. So, quite naturally, there is a general consensus on Dempsey's surefire and cold-bloodied desire to get the job done in double-time.

I skimmed it; looks like a good write up...

I just don't like the guy. At all. He refused to fight the best HW contenders that were out there because they were all black. Wills was the number one contender throughout his whole 6-ish year title run. And he refused to fight him.

I find it funny that writers up until the 1960's, when polled, would list Dempsey as the best or second best HW and sometimes "P4P" boxer up until that time.

He has been in some of the most iconic fights of all time (Willard, Firpo, Tunney), so I appreciate him for that. But he is just generally overrated because for some reason he carries some aura with him. He was great for his era, but anyone who thinks he is better than or even very close to Jack Johnson in terms of skills or accomplishments is fooling themselves.

...And he totally had a couple-inch-long rod tucked in his glove for the Willard fight (not plaster of paris, as long rumored, but an actual metal rod which he drops after round 1 and his cornerman sketchily marches across the ring where it was at and kicks it to the ground off the canvas in the chaos since everyone thought the ref called the fight when he hadn't; ever wonder why he dropped Willard 10+ times in the first round but couldn't drop him once in the two rounds that followed before Willards' corner stopped it?!?).

Nice article. I always liked Dempsey but was never impressed with his championship reign and taking so much time off. It was a different era though and difficult for most fans today to understand because they dont do enough research. He most defintely should have fought Greb and Wills though. Either way he is an icon of heavyweight boxing and deservedly so. Thanks for the read. :good

I find that hard to believe considering Dempsey's gloves were put on in the ring with the ref and Willard's people watching. It is possible that after the violent barrage of punches in round 1, he tired himself out and lost the sting off his punches?

It's interesting you choose to condemn Dempsey for not fighting black contenders during his time as champion but exalt Johnson who was accused of the same practice.

Jobnson was just as guilty and his title reign just as disappointing.

Jack Dempsey is one of the most overrated boxers in history.

He wasn't much of a champion - he went 2 years without defending his title, and after that 3 years without defending it.
