Everyone is so afraid to come out and say it: Most people want Hopkins to win because he is an African American boxing icon.

Lol, only an insecure b*tch would think that. If most people want Hopkins to win its because hes damn near 50.

Figured you would get all hysterical.:patsch

What was my crime again, calling Hopkins an African American boxing icon?

Is the death penalty in order or will life suffice? Let me know after you get off the phone with Eric Holder?

Hopkins, although almost 50, is the more known commodity. Kovalev has been feasting on stiffs, and bums. His fights don't usually go that many rounds. We know Hopkins can take a shot or two and keep on ticking. We know he ties up well, and hasn't shown a previous problem with robotic power punchers. Kovalev beating up chumps, has no bearing on how he would do against Hopkins. Just like Hopkins decisioning Holmes, while Trinidad destroyed Joppy, had no bearing on the Hopkins vs Trinidad match up.

He's the most skilled boxer in boxing.

I don't think Kovalev has the skills to beat him. Sure Kovalev has a punch, but Hopkins has the best defense in boxing.

I just don't see Kovalev landing much. I think Hopkins is going to pick him apart.

I disagree that Kovalev is better than those fighters, but I do believe Hopkins has aged enough for me not to pick him in this fight

    You forgot how he also:

    -is more technically sound
-was an accomplished amateur in a difficult program,
    -has a better professional team/corner
-is mentally prepared for what Hopkins is bringing

It definitely appears that Krusher has trained for this encounter the right way. He's prepped for war. The gameplan to set a high pace and brutalize Hopkins (by hitting him hard everywhere) requires being well conditioned. John David Jackson sounds like he doesn't want it in the hands of the judges, so Kovalev will be bringing educated pressure. We'll see how Hopkins handles it. I can't see how he makes it out of this fight without receiving some real punishment.

’m trying to figure out why many fans think Hopkins will win. And then it hit me. I think some of pro Hopkins support has to due with hope.

You see Kovalev is just the first of a wave of very talented Russians about to dominate the light heavyweight division. This fight will likely see Kovalev crowned as the new king. After Hopkins USA prospects are a little thin at light heavy. This could explain why Hopkins has so many picking him to win.

Russian light heavies on the way up are at an all time high. Soon the light heavyweight division will resemble the heavyweight division. The good news is the fighters on the way up are very fan friendly. Who are they?

I think Beterbiev ( New pro ) will clean Kovalev’s clock if they meet in the pro’s. In fact he already did in the amateurs. Mekhonstev and Govzdyk are very talented as well. You’d have to follow the amateur game to be familiar with them. But there’s no doubt they are grade A prospects with an eye on the prize. Give it two more years and we’ll have a bunch of guys willing to fight each other.

It won't be Roy Jones cherry picking his opponents.

    1. How do we know Hopkins is the best Kovalev fought? He's 49, and is his record as a light heavy has a few losses on it. Some of the speedier fighters Kovalev Ko'd could have won a decision over Hopkins. Hopkins is the biggest name Kovalev fought.

    2. Kovalev has over 200 amateur fights and has made a few titles defenses as a professional. With 10+ years in the gym vs all styles, Hopkins bag of tricks won't be as effective. Kovalev is accurate to the head or body, and reasonably well on defense fora power puncher type who presses the action.

    3. I agree with your point.

    4. Disagree. Kovalev will throw and land more. He doesn't need a stoppage to win. In addition Hopkins who will have issues if Kovalev lands well to the body can go into a defensive shell. Its hard to win rounds this way, even if he lands 1 or 2 sweet coutners.

Other than Kovalev, Hopkins, Stevenson, and now Beterbiev, who else of note is there at LHW?

Yep, this could be the best action division in boxing. Lots of young talent on the way up.

Beterbiev is a hard man with a 2X the durability of Kovalev and hits just as hard. Wow--what a prospect.

No no, I meant right now. All of those guys are prospects right now, and it could be a year or two before they make it to the world level.
