Muhammad Ali comes to mind he beat just about everyone who was around during his time, all the contenders and pretenders and there were plenty of both.

I'd like to see someone do Wlad. He must be at least top 5 by now.

Here's something I posted in early 2011. It doesn't cover Holmes' career, but does give a good synopsis of his title reign.

Ring Magazine Rankings at the time of Holmes' defenses:

    Holmes #1, Evangelista #6
    Holmes #1, Ocasio #5
    Holmes #1, Weaver #8
    Holmes #1, Shavers #3
    Holmes #1, Zanon #7
    Holmes #1, Jones #6
(At this point Ring awarded Holmes it's belt as he had already beaten new WBA champ Weaver
    LeDoux #10
    Ali #5
    Berbick #7
    Spinks #3
    Snipes #10
    Cooney #2
    Cobb #9
    Rodriguez unranked
    Witherspoon #10
    Frank unranked
    Frazier #10
    Smith #9
    Bey #3
    Williams #12
    Spinks - LH Champ

In addition, prior to Shavers I Ring ranked Holmes #4 and Shavers #7. Going into the Norton fight, Norton was ranked #2 (behind Ali) and Holmes was ranked #3.

He's getting close. As far as I know Ali, Lewis, Charles, Louis, Holmes, and Holyfield are ahead of him. He might be even or around Patterson and Tyson.

    Quality thread this.

I think it really outlines why Louis and Ali are in a league of their own at HW. Adding their records in fights for the undisputed/lineal title (26-1 and 22-3) makes it even clearer.

I can look it up later but if you want an exact measure of how great Charles was he beat 40 rated contenders in his career. The only two other men to do that are Archie Moore and Sugar Ray Robinson.

Ah, that would be interesting to see.

I intentionally left off some of the rated LHWs he beat as a HW like Gus, but that alone would raise him to like 20+.

But a definitive Charles list would be something.
