Sturm vs. Stieglitz II is likely next, then the winner takes on Abraham.

Would love to see Golovkin in the mix.

 

Did GGG just steal the show?

 

I don't think so but he definitely added to it. GGG vs Abraham or Sturm are not 2 round KO fights, they are both good competitive fights. Even if GGG beats them both, which I think he probably does, they are both a big step up from fighters he has faced so far.

 

Geale is better than Sturm. Sturm is a downgrade.

 

sturm is a big step up for triple G? you must be sturm's girlfriend. he's macklin, geale level, and always been scared shitless of triple G.

 

Not really. Sturm vs. Geale was very close and although Geale won a SD, I think that a draw or 115-113 Sturm was more appropriate (majority had Sturm winning). Anyway, Sturm is a much higher profile fight than Geale or any other fight Golovkin had so far. Also I believe that Sturm would be harder for Golovkin, although either way GGG by stoppage is the most likely outcome. I just don't think that Sturm would fold early.

The bottom line is that Sturm (despite being old and over the hill) is a very big upgrade from the Geale fight in terms of magnitude, importance and significance.

 

I just dont see it that way. I know Geale beat Sturm in a somewhat disputed decision but who has Geale fought and beat?

The biggest names on his CV are Barker, GGG, Mundie & Sturm. 3 of them he lost too, clearly and the 4th he won via split decision in a fight most observers thought he lost. He is clearly very good to have done as well as he has and has a good win over Sebastian Sylvester as well as a win over Mundie in a rematch.

Geale got blasted out in 3 by GGG and was out of his depth from 20 seconds into the first round. I just think both Abraham and Sturm fare a lot better than this against GGG.

 

This fight was scored perfectly. Both fighters stood in the pocket firing power punches for the entire 36 minutes. Just when one fighter seemed to take control, the other would immediately rally with his own series of punches. Stieglitz was slightly more the aggressor, Sturm was more the counterpuncher but initiated his own fair share of the exchanges. Neither fighter seemed to have a power advantage; a few times Sturm's punches had Stieglitz stopped still in his tracks for a split-second, but Stieglitz snapped Sturm's head several times. For all the punches thrown, neither fighter was remotely in trouble; it really was back-and-forth on an even plane for the entire fight. Neither fighter had an edge in ring generalship, and neither fighter showed any defensive maneuvers during the fight. Postfight, Stieglitz had a cut above his right eye, a bruise on the bridge of his nose, and a mouse under his left eye, while Sturm was pretty much unmarked. When I checked the prefight odds on bet365 last night, the fight was a pick 'em, each fighter listed as 10/11 favourites, and that's how it played out. I had expected a much more cagey fight because of Sturm's style, and because he was moving up in weight, albeit at a catchweight. Instead, we got a legitimate Fight of the Year candidate. The judging was perfect, each fighter getting a 115-113 score in his favour, and the third judge scoring a 114-114 draw. The postfight fellowship in the ring between Stieglitz and Sturm, and with Abraham and Golovkin joining them, was fantastic to see. There was of course much postfight talk of a rematch. However, since this was a "special attraction" fight at a catchweight, with neither fighter apparently imminently scheduled for a title shot, and because this fight was literally a draw in every sense, I think there should not be a rematch, and that history should simply recognise these two fighters on even terms.

I gotta disagree, Geale lost disputed decision with Barker, whom he dropped and outworked and got his revenge vs Mundine. He is easily Sturms equal as far as profiles.

 

Geale is a bum a prime Sturm would easily have beaten him. Geale had to wait 4 years for Mundine to be 39 years old before winning the rematch.

 

not sure which fight you watched. sturm schooled him the first half of the fight. couldnt be tagged and was countering the hell out of stieg. it must feel **** to know you cant win against a fighter you are several levels above in skill.

 

Stieglitz and Sturm are happy because they can fight each other again and can avoid Golovkin
